Watching another man playing Darcy in Lost in Austen has got me nostalgic for Colin Firth in period costume, so I couldn't help but smile when I saw these shots of him filming Dorian Gray in London. He's playing Lord Henry Wotton opposite Ben Barnes as Dorian in the film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel. Following his role in Mamma Mia!, Colin is in talks to star as a gay college professor in Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man. If you want your Colin fix right now, he's on the big screen here in the UK in Then She Found Me alongside Helen Hunt and Bette Midler.

That beard and mustache is NOT attractive on him!!!
1He looks like a dad with that look.
2He looks like a sinister Puritan from Salem, Massachusetts during the witchcraft trials with that look.
3Really?!
4Nah, still looks very huggable (sp?) to me!
I thought Lost in Austen was craptastic, and I felt exactly the same way about Darcy, someone bring me back my Colin Firth!
5Seeing the wet shirt scene done by someone else just didn't do it for me...
i love him
6Pimprenelle - funny, within the same week I've watched Lost in Austen and Keira's Pride and Prejudice. You obviously can't beat the BBC one, but I thought Lost in Austen did a pretty good job, esp compared to the 1995 version where Darcy is probably as sexy as a spoon. Seriously.
7Just made me want to watch the BBC one again hehe!
I hadn't heard about this film at all. May be quite fun, but recent Wilde adaptations have all been pretty rubbish.
8I think the trick is to make them quite dark and serious, despite the funny lines, but the opposite happens, they're really camp and lightly done. You have to treat them as a bit heavy, or the paperthinness of the plots is a bit grating.
9Oh no! I am so torn!
I love this novel, and Colin Firth (and Emilia Fox and Fiona Shaw, etc, etc), but Oliver Parker, the director, managed to suck all the wit out of "The Importance of Being Earnest". The timing/editing was excruciating, completely undermining that talented cast.
I shudder what he will do to another Oscar Wilde. Already, removing "The Picture of" from the title smacks of Hamlet 2-level arrogance and hubris.
10i'm actually really looking forward to seeing him as dorian gray. i read the book such a long time ago and i think that he's really well suited for the part.
i also had to vote that he was my favorite darcy...
