Barack Obama has been elected president of the United States. The Democratic Senator beat John McCain to become the first black president of the country. It was predicted 130 million Americans would vote, the most since 1960.
At a victory rally in Chicago, Obama said:
"It's been a long time coming, but tonight... change has come to America... If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."
He added:
"Even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. But America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there."

John McCain accepted defeat, saying "I deeply admire and commend" Obama, and calling on his supporters to give the next president their goodwill.
Obama won key states of Pennsylvania and Ohio, and achieved the winning threshold of 270 electoral college votes at 4am GMT, when projections showed he had also taken California. He is also projected to have won several states that voted Republican in 2004, including Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Ohio, New Mexico, Iowa and Nevada.

1Woohoo!!
After getting some bad news yesterday, I really need some
cheer up and I can't think of better than that!
I know McCain's supposed to take things well in that kind of situation, but that was still a nice thing to say.
2I thought McCain gave a great speech. It did warm my heart a bit, I must admit.
3All I can say is thank goodness. This is so exciting!

5This is the first time I've really been old enough to understand the enormity of the US elections and I have to say it has been an interesting one - I even stayed up till 2.30 to watching BBC News 24.
*does a happy dance*
6I agree SW.. it's the first time I've understood the importance of it...
I'm so pleased.. I think the world is breathing a sigh of relief!
7Brilliant result! and great speech too
8I must also say I thought McCain's speech was generous and moving.
Yay! Obama is President for all the right reasons. The US really did need a change and if they had voted McCain, nothing would've changed. The US would still be in the mess that they are still in! I can't wait to see what the future holds for America and Obama as President!
9yea i agree even though i dont really know what Obama and Mccain were all about, i still think from seeing a few clips you can tell whos the most genuine, i was worried about Mccain getting in, i think he was more about the power than the real reason of being a president, lolasvelt look at us as well though, were in a complete mess too...i dont know one good thing that our goveronment has done in 11 years apart from the smoking ban...and they only did that last year...so were not exactly good atm either...
10YAY! finally some hope!
11aww im so happy!! yay, go obama...oops i mean President Obama!
