James Franco hit the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival last night with his ex-girlfriend and current costar Ahna O'Reilly to premiere their new project, As I Lay Dying. The two were joined by costar Tim Blake Nelson as well as Rosario Dawson, who doesn't star in the film but does share a connection with James as they have both worked with Harmony Korine. (James starred in Harmony's most recent film, Spring Breakers, while Rosario made her film debut in 1995's Kids, which Harmony cowrote.) The premiere was a big deal for James, who also directed the movie. We caught up with Ahna earlier this week in Cannes, where she talked about how excited she was that James asked her to take on the female lead after the two had broken up. She said, "I knew James could get any number of actresses to play that role," adding, "I think he did a tremendous job and I'm so proud of it and proud of him."

Ahna also premiered her new project, Fruitvale Station, at Cannes earlier this week — be sure to check out Ahna, James, and all the other celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival!

Jessica Chastain arrived in Cannes over the weekend and she has already made a splash on the party circuit.

Jessica Chastain arrived in Cannes over the weekend and she has already made a splash on the party circuit. She wore Shamballa earrings as she attended a Chanel and Vanity Fair dinner last night, alongside stars James Franco, Milla Jovovich, and Paz Vega. James stopped by the dinner after hosting a party in honor of his ex-girlfriend Ahna O'Reilly on a yacht earlier in the day. Ahna costars alongside James in his directorial debut, As I Lay Dying, which is premiering tonight at the festival.

As for Jessica, she is in the South of France to promote the 50th anniversary of Cleopatra. She will host a special screening of the newly restored project tomorrow and will also wear the famous emerald and diamond necklace Richard Burton gave to Elizabeth Taylor during the production of the film. Jessica stopped over in Cannes after wrapping up filming for her latest project, Miss Julie, in Ireland. Jessica posted photos of her visit to Ireland on her Facebook page, noting that it was "tough to say goodbye" to the Emerald Isle.

James Franco Hosts a Cannes Bash For Former Girlfriend and Current Costar Ahna O'Reilly

James Franco toasted Ahna O'Reilly at a dinner party held on a yacht last night in Cannes. The event, thrown by James and The Art of Elysium, honored the actress's impressive debut at the film festival. Ahna is starring in not one but two movies being presented at the cinematic celebration. She acts alongside James in his latest passion project, As I Lay Dying, and is also in town for the premiere of Fruitvale Station, which was one of the most talked-about films at Sundance earlier this year. That project saw Ahna reunite with her The Help costar, Octavia Spencer, who stopped by the soiree last night. Guests mingled on the deck — where James and Ahna were the center of attention — over Champagne and dinner as the sun set on the South of France.

James and Ahna dated for several years before parting ways in 2011, then recently reunited professionally for their latest film. Last night, they shared a hug as James arrived before catching up with the creative crowd in attendance. It was a relaxed evening for the pair, who are preparing to unveil As I Lay Dying tonight at its Cannes premiere. The movie is an adaptation of William Faulkner's most acclaimed novel and marks James's feature-length directorial debut. It's one of 17 movies from around the world in competition at the festival, which continues throughout the week.

As I Lay Dying Trailer: James Franco Takes on Faulkner

Based on William Faulkner's novel of the same name, As I Lay Dying features James Franco as both director and star of the film — thick Southern accent and all.

Based on William Faulkner's novel of the same name, As I Lay Dying features James Franco as both director and star of the film — thick Southern accent and all. Set in Mississippi during the Depression, the story follows a family that hopes to honor the wishes of the deceased matriarch, only to face a series of dark complications. The film also stars Tim Blake Nelson, Logan Marshall-Green, and Danny McBride in an unusually dramatic role (it's quite the contrast to the other movie that McBride and Franco are co-starring in this Summer, This Is the End).

Franco also cowrote the script with Matt Rager, and the film adaptation looks to be as dark and as complicated as the book. If the preview is any indication, then As I Lay Dying isn't for the faint of heart. Even in the short trailer, we see death, violence, murder, and rape. The movie premieres at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but you can catch a glimpse now with the trailer below.

She wore a bright Dolce & Gabbana ensemble as she posed for photos with costars Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and James Franco, and later attended a Q&A session about Spring Breakers. During the premiere, James talked about his violent, cornrow-wearing character in the film, noting that it was a "fun" character to play but he hated his hairstyle. He said, "The grills were cool. I hated the cornrows … if anybody had cornrows, you're in the club. We can get together and say, 'Aw, the itch; it's horrible.'"

After debuting their project, Selena attended an afterparty with stars like Chloë Sevigny, while Ashley and James, who were rumored to be dating back in October, cuddled up for photos.
