The big winners at last night's MTV Europe Music Awards were Britney Spears and Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds To Mars, each of them winning two awards. Hostess Katy Perry beat Duffy to take home the award for New Act, and the Brits were represented by Sir Paul McCartney and Rick Astley who each took home a gong. For the most part, the winners were American, and there was certainly a theme running through the evening as President-Elect Barack Obama's face showed up on everything from the video screens to one of Katy's twelve brightly coloured outfits!

The show was definitely dominated by Americans, which included performances from Pink, The Killers, Kid Rock, Kanye West (with Estelle) and Katy herself, what did you think — would you have preferred more European acts performing as Take That and The Ting Tings did? Or was the overriding American influence reflecting our tastes in music in Europe? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

1Missed it last night but it does look a little one sided.!
2I hate that its basically all American winners/performers.
3Its not like American artists are better than European artists.
I don't know why MTV Europe doesn't do anything to promote European artists.
It's the same every year. They really should start promoting Europeans.
4I remember watching the MTV Europe Awards in the late 90's early 2000's and it actually HAD Europe artists and presenters. I know American acts are popular in Europe, but how about showcasing the artists from those countries. I get enough US artists at all the other US awards shows here.
5I watched last year, too. Tokio Hotel and Justice were the only winners from mainland Europe, and I'm pretty sure the only nominees.
Tocotronic's Kapitulation was released in 2007.
Look up Tocotronic's "Kapitulation" and "Imitationen", the two singles from the album.
Basically no one outside of German-speaking countries know who they are, so obviously the album wasn't going to be nominated.
Tokio Hotel got lucky. They are like my babies and I love them, but they really aren't the best German band out right now, and I don't understand why others can't be popular throughout Europe.
MC Solaar (France) released his album Chapitre 7 in 2007, but he had no nominations.
6and there's also Nneka who is from Nigeria, but currently based in Hamburg
7Maybe if she had relocated to New York instead she would have gotten a nomination.
I agree, it's getting really difficult to see the difference between US and Europe award ceremonies. But of course that makes me sound old..
