Elbow Win The 2008 Mercury Music Prize
Elbow have won the Mercury Music Prize for best album of the last twelve months. The group won the £20,000 prize last night for their fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid. They beat Estelle, Adele, Radiohead, Laura Marling, bookies' favourite Burial, The Last Shadow Puppets and Rachel Unthank and the Winterset to the prestigious prize. Elbow frontman Guy Garvey dedicated the award to the late 'seldom seen kid' of the title, he said:
"Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager. This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Brian Clancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"
