The classic novel Great Expectations has clearly been a popular read ahead of the Autumn '11 shows as it has inspired both Prabal Gurung and Marchesa. The latter is particularly famous for bridal pieces (Nicole Richie got married in one of Marchesa's designs late last year) and this season has gone quite edgy. The worn looking gowns had raw hems and zig zag edges with sheer fabrics making short dresses look like maxis. There was a gothic feel to some of the pieces which used black and red with beautiful, delicate embroidery. Marchesa did not stage a catwalk show for this collection, instead the models were required to stand on plinths allowing attendees to get a closer look at the designs.
