I know what you're thinking — are pockets really a trend, surely they're a practicality? Well, whilst they can be functional this season, they're adorning everything from trousers and coats to evening gowns. At the Golden Globe Awards earlier this week January Jones posed in a blue Versace dress casually with hands in pockets. Dresses appeared all over the catwalk in a similar style from Gareth Pugh to Michael Kors (pictured left). The current desire for pockets is not without connotation. Pocket expert Barbara Burman explains, "Pockets are a tiny, slight thing in terms of world importance but they are a very sensitive barometer about how we feel about the world and our possessions and how we feel about our bodies."
Coco Chanel was one of the first designers to include pockets in womenswear, which at the time, caused outrage. It was believed that pockets liberated women with a sporty practicality, as previously they had required a man to carry their personal items for them. If you're tired of lugging round an oversized handbag, perhaps a pocketed coat is this season's solution.
