What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

There are lots of A-list faces on this week's new DVD releases, but if you're looking for something a little more kid-friendly, Yogi Bear is also available.

The Tourist

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp team up for this spy caper about a woman (Jolie) who seduces an innocent tourist (Depp) while on the run from authorities looking for her criminal ex-boyfriend in Venice. Johnny Depp takes a break from his typical fare to play a goofy average Joe, while Jolie provides pure eye candy as usual, thanks in part to her wardrobe. Though it's fun to watch these two gorgeous actors play off each other, ultimately they don't generate much heat to keep the weak plot afloat. DVD extras include outtakes, featurettes, and director's commentary.

How Do You Know

Reese Witherspoon stars as Lisa, a neurotic softball player who feels lost after being cut from the National team for being too old. As she struggles to figure out what to do with her life, she crosses paths with George (Paul Rudd), who is going through a life crisis of his own. Though she's already involved with a lovable but dim-witted baseball player named Matty (Owen Wilson), Lisa begins to wonder which guy — if either — is the right one for her. I thought the film was one of the best romantic comedies of 2010, thanks to enchanting performances from the three leads, along with Jack Nicholson. DVD bonus features include delete scenes, a blooper reel, and featurettes.

Reese Witherspoon carried a large Louis Vuitton bag as she left the label's Paris headquarters earlier today. The How Do You Know actress is overseas promoting the film with Paul Rudd, but she made a pit stop in France, where she reportedly shopped for a wedding dress. After spending the majority of her morning at LVMH, Reese then visited Lanvin, Chanel, and Giambattista Valli, but it's still up in the air which designer she'll choose for her upcoming nuptials to Jim Toth. The guest list on her big day may be limited to close friends and family, but hopefully some of her sexy costars, like Water for Elephants' Robert Pattinson, can score an invitation.

Reese and Paul Reunite For a Morning of German Promotion

Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd smiled for the cameras at a How Do You Know photo call in Berlin this morning. The duo are overseas in the midst of a European promotional tour for their movie, which came out in the US last month. Buzz was a big fan of the film despite its lackluster performance at the box office. Reese didn't let the underwhelming box office numbers diminish her holiday season, though, as she announced her engagement to Jim Toth around the project's Dec. 17 release. She's back in press mode following a weekend spent doing reshoots for Water For Elephants alongside her costar Robert Pattinson. Paul, meanwhile, hasn't had a shortage of hot costars after working on Wanderlust with Jennifer Aniston, and next up for him is another Apatow project with Leslie Mann.

All the special effects of the futuristic Tron: Legacy were enough to lure audiences to the theaters. The sequel scored the top spot at the box office for its opening weekend, earning $43.6 million. Behind it was another newcomer, Yogi Bear, which took in $16.7 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was knocked from number one and slid to third place with $12.4 million.

The Fighter reaped the benefits of a wider release and many award nominations: the boxing film was boosted from 19th to fourth with $12.2 million. Meanwhile, The Tourist stumbled to fifth place with $8.7 million. New romantic comedy How Do You Know didn't receive a warm welcome: the Reese Witherspoon/Paul Rudd/Owen Wilson flick took in just $7.6 million.

How Do You Know: Simply Irresistible

A truly great romantic comedy is hard to come by these days.

A truly great romantic comedy is hard to come by these days. All too often we're subjected to tired cliches, overused personality types, and slapstick comedy in the place of a predictable but uplifting movie about love. With that said, How Do You Know is the rare gem of a love story that has all the right moves: big laughs, enchanting characters, and a sweet aftertaste.

The latest from writer/director James L. Brooks (As Good as it Gets) centers on Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) and George (Paul Rudd), as they each face a road block in their thirty-something lives. Lisa, an aging softball player who believes strongly in age-old affirmations, has just been cut from the national team and is struggling to figure out how to spend her time, and more important, whom to spend it with. George, a goofy good guy, thinks he has it all together until he's subpoenaed at work for suspicion of stock fraud and is facing the real possibility of facing jail time for a crime he didn't commit.

Inspired: Reese Witherspoon's Black and Pink Dress From How Do You Know Premiere

Last night at the LA premiere for How Do You Know, Reese Witherspoon looked stunning in a Zac Posen Spring 2011 strapless dress. Feathery pink accents added unusual detail to the black structured dress, which overall gave Reese a glam look on the red carpet. Interested in finding a similar dark and glam look for the home, I assembled lots of black pieces with sexy lines. The Louis Ghost Chair ($410) in black was a go-to choice, and its modern lines are a great juxtaposition with the curving legs of the Black Lacquer Five-Legged Table ($380). To finish the look, add pops of pink with throw pillows, vases, throws, and, of course, some great artwork. I love this 1963 Untitled Mark Rothko Print ($120). Shop the rest of the look by clicking on each image!
