Pop A DVD In: Stop-Loss

Stop-Loss stars Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as three soldiers whose friendships and lives fall apart on their return home after serving in Iraq when Brandon King (Philippe) is "stop-lossed"; the US policy where soldiers who have completed their service are called back to serve again.

Brandon hits the road to seek justice and is accompanied by Michelle (Abbie Cornish), the fiancée of his childhood buddy Steve Shriver (Tatum), while those he leaves in Texas - particularly Tommy Burgess (Gordon-Levitt) - struggle to come to terms with life back home.

The acting by all three main male actors is great, and Channing Tatum won a Teen Choice Award in the "Movie Actor: Drama" category for his performance. I agree with my girl Buzz US that some of the accents are pretty awful, but that doesn't detract too much from the gripping drama.

Watching Stop-Loss is an intense experience from the very beginning, with the film opening in Iraq and the camerawork contributing to the sense of unease and suspense. I didn't find the film sentimental nor sensational, more a gritty dramatisation of a frightening, frustrating and above-all complex situation. I was surprised at the lack of a love story, given Abbie Cornish's role, but I ended up pleased that the movie focussed more on the male friendships and the tensions within them.

The DVD extras are impressive, with a commentary from director Kimberly Peirce and co-writer Mark Richard, "Making Of" and "A Day in Boot Camp" featurettes and 11 deleted scenes, including some shirtless Ryan Phillippe action.

If you want to see more before deciding whether or not to pick up a copy of Stop-Loss you can head over to Buzz US to check out the trailer. I'd certainly recommend the film to those of you looking for a thought-provoking, well-acted film about the war.

Manjoyment: Hello Shirtless Ryan Phillippe

What better way to cheer up a grey day than to see Ryan Phillippe in all his shirtless glory. We've got a sneak peak at these manjoyment stills, which come from the deleted scenes of the DVD release of Stop-Loss, Ryan's movie with Abbie Cornish. Also starring Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film focuses on a how a group of friends and family in Texas react when their loved ones in the military are called back having already served in Iraq. It was out on DVD in the States a month ago, but us Brits will finally get the chance to get our hands on the film on 18 August.

I'm still gutted that he and Reese split to be honest – they were my favourite Hollywood couple for a long time – but lets not dwell on the past when we have some scrummy manjoyment right in front of us! Ryan Gets A Supermarket Work Out

Maybe this is why Ryan Phillippe has such a honed bod – he uses everyday activities as a work out. Watch as he pushes his shopping trolley to the car, full of groceries and with Deacon and Ava hanging off the side. Then he lifts multiple bags at a time to get his biceps going... frankly I could watch him doing that, or anything else all day. But the person he shares his days with is Abbie Cornish, who he took to Vegas for her birthday earlier this month – lucky girl! Guess I'll just have to get my Stop Loss DVD out then...

Brits David, Keira and Ed Win At US Teen Choice Awards

America has already let the kids choose this year, so it was time for the teens to have their say at the Teen Choice Awards 2008 last night in LA. The usual pretty and adored-by-kids suspects were there last night - The Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Miranda Cosgrove, Demi Lovato, Drake Bell, Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron and the show's host Miley Cyrus, as well as some big names to all ages like Will Smith, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Holloway, Blake Lively, Rachel Bilson and Steve Carell.

Us Brits were represented by David Beckham, who brought Victoria, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz to watch him win a surfboard for Choice Male Athlete; Keira Knightley, who wasn't actually there but won Choice Drama Movie Actress; and Ed Westwick, whose Choice TV Villain surfboard proved that even when we're putting on US accents, Americans think that Brits are best at being villains!

Manjoyment: Ryan Phillippe At LAX

Okay, so here's Ryan Phillippe, looking gorgeous as usual. What's he up to? Going through airport security at LAX, he's just a hot guy doing an everyday thing. And the reason for this post? Do I need a reason?! Fine – he's hot – that's my reason. I'd be happy watching him go through airport security all day... but then, I also enjoy watching him with his adorable kids, oh... and working out too. Sadly his latest movie Stop-Loss didn't score too highly at the US box office, but as long as he keeps looking like that, I don't think he needs to worry too much...
