Picture and Quotes From Aaron Sorkin About Mark Zuckerberg in 2011 Oscars Press Room

Aaron Sorkin has been picking up accolades throughout award season for his adapted screenplay for The Social Network, and he completed his run with an Oscar win last night. Back in the press room, the screenwriter talked about his next project, the power of the Internet, and why he has to give proper credit to Mark Zuckerberg.

  • On the talented, young cast of The Social Network: I'll try to sum it up this way. Like a lot of people I grew up watching The Graduate and I always wondered what it must have been like for Buck Henry to see Dustin Hoffman just do it for the first time, with no rehearsal. I don't wonder anymore. I know exactly how he felt. I see Jesse doing it. I see Andrew doing it. Justin, Armie, and this cast do it under the guidance of David Fincher. It was an incredibly talented and very, very young cast. This material isn't for beginners. These were the youngest characters I've ever written. We had to find exceptional actors and we found them all and got the best performances out of them. It wasn't just the performances. It was everything.
  • On what's up next: I'll be very candid with you. Since the movie came out and got the kind of critical reaction and cultural reaction that it's gotten, I've been hyper aware that the thing I do next is going to be "the thing I did after The Social Network." I'm going to spend tonight enjoying this and tomorrow starting something new. I think that's what I have to do. I'm just going to keep writing. Keep doing what I've always been doing. Try to find something that I like. Something that I think my friends will like and my father would like and keep my fingers crossed.
  • On Mark Zuckerberg: I think he's been an awfully good sport about this film. I don't think that there is anybody here who would want a movie made about things they did when they were 19 years old. And if that movie absolutely, positively had to be made, you'd want it to be made only from your point of view. And you wouldn't want included the point of view of people suing you for hundreds of millions of dollars and have a visceral, emotional reaction to you. That is the movie that we made. And then with things like Mark's appearance on SNL, the fact that he took his staff out to see the movie the day it came out in the US on Oct. 1, and, however it might be related, his $100 million gift to the New Jersey school system. That was met with some cynicism in the press, but I'm sure that the kids, and their parents, and the teachers in Newark aren't worried about how the money got there. So my hat's off to him.
  • On his relationship with The King's Speech writer David Seidler: I'm proud to say I've got a bromance going with him. I think that his screenplay for The King's Speech is remarkable. It started when I asked around and got his email address after I saw the movie because I had to write and tell him how much I loved it. I'd never met him before or had any interaction with him. He emailed back and we began emailing each other every few days.
  • On the influence of social media: Listen, I've written a lot and talked a little bit about being wary about the Internet. Somewhere along the way I've become my grandmother. You saw what happened in Cairo and there are other examples of social networking tools mobilizing people for great causes like that. Again, we have to thank the Mark Zuckerbergs that are out there.

Jesse Eisenberg Calls Mark Zuckerberg "Sweet" and "Generous" in His Funny Oscar Nominees Lunch Interview

Jesse Eisenberg was among the award season front-runners who stopped by the interview room yesterday at the Oscars nominee lunch in LA.

Jesse Eisenberg was among the award season front-runners who stopped by the interview room yesterday at the Oscars nominee lunch in LA. He followed Javier Bardem and kept things similarly humble and lighthearted. The Social Network star cracked a few jokes as he took questions and opened up about meeting Mark Zuckerberg during SNL. He said:

  • On what awards season's been like: "When I was 13, I had to go to bat mitzvahs every weekend and this is like the same thing. You have to put on a suit every weekend to go meet with a lot of Jews. [laughs] It’s been very nice. The alternative is worse, where no one likes your movie. I’ve experienced that, and this is better."
  • On meeting Mark Zuckerberg: "I was nervous to meet him, because I had spent now, a year and a half thinking about him...I was doing everything he did, taking fencing lessons because he fenced in high school. I had built up this kind of great anticipation...and then we met under circumstances that were far more anxiety producing, which was to be on national TV together."
  • On whether he thinks the movie was good for Facebook: "It’s hard to say. I’m sure the company was a little nervous about the movie, and I think it’s actually, like you implied, ultimately been good for them...Mark has been so gracious about something that’s really so uncomfortable....The fact that he would do SNL and make fun of the situation is so sweet and so generous. It’s the best possible way to handle something that, I think, could otherwise be very uncomfortable."
  • On his nomination: "I have this, like, general sense of feeling like I don’t belong, though I talked to a lot of other people who I think of as very much belonging and they have the same feeling. So I think it’s a room full of insecure actors, which is ultimately comforting."

Jesse Eisenberg Takes the Lead For Social Network Cast in Critics' Choice Press Room

The Social Network took home the top honours at last night's Critics' Choice Awards, and the whole crew came back to the press room to chat about their big win.

The Social Network took home the top honours at last night's Critics' Choice Awards, and the whole crew came back to the press room to chat about their big win. This may be a sign of things to come this award season, and we think they have a good chance of snagging statues at Sunday's Golden Globes. Jesse Eisenberg fielded all the questions during the brief interview, though Andrew Garfield was the subject of many glowing words from his Spider-Man costar Emma Stone earlier in the evening. Check out the full list of winners, and here's what Jesse had to say in the press room:

  • Jesse on how life has changed since being cast in The Social Network: "Well, as soon as I was cast, I filmed the movie and that was the first big change. It's just been an overwhelming experience to be involved with something that has been received so amicably, not only by people who like movies, but by people who appreciate things that are culturally substantive."
  • On encountering the script for the first time: "I think like everybody, when I opened the first 15 pages of the script, we were surprised to see that the same scene was continuing on, page after page, because that's very rare. We were surprised to see how exciting that was."

Stay tuned for more from the press room, and vote in all our fashion and beauty polls on Fab and Bella!

Andrew is your one to watch for 2011 and he's kicked it off kissing Emma on set and talking about identifying with Peter Parker. Justin Timberlake Is Digitally Dead, but Just Injured in Reality

Justin Timberlake attended a special screening of The Social Network in LA Thursday.

Justin Timberlake attended a special screening of The Social Network in LA Thursday. He was on a break from Now, which he's busy filming with costar Amanda Seyfried. Justin was spotted handling some big guns while shooting, but he wasn't able to prevent a recent minor on-set injury. He looked to be doing just fine during the event for his successful film, which centred on the creation of Facebook. Justin just gave up use of his own social networking tools along with other celebrities like Lady Gaga in an effort to raise money for charity. They haven't reached their goal of $1 million yet, as their project has stalled at around $200,000.
