29/01/2019 - 04:35 PM

Let's just get this out of the way: there are far more important things happening on Capitol Hill [1] right now than the reveal of someone's skincare routine [2]. Still, when representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez [3] — the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress — dropped her skin tips on Instagram, it gave the world (or at least, her two million followers) a glimmer of hope for the future [4] we've yet to see from government shutdown negotiations.

Maybe she too needs a break from the constant CNN alerts or also happens to turn to beauty as a chosen form of self-care [5] (of which we say: welcome to the club). Either way, Ocasio-Cortez revealed many useful nuggets of advice for anyone looking to firm up their beauty routines, captioning her post: "Skincare is a straight up hobby of mine. I'm a science nerd and I truly enjoy the science of it, reading about compounds and studies, etc. It's like that."

Read on to see her tips in full, and remember: you can still be a "fierce woman who can do both ✨ [6]."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Skincare Tips

Ocasio-Cortez explained that's she's learned what works best for her through trial and error, saying, "The biggest factors that I think help *my* skin: I don't wear full-coverage foundation; I keep wipes next to my bed and at the very least wipe it off; and I have a multi-step skincare routine. I do indulge on this a little since I don't buy a lot of makeup beyond my staples."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Skincare Tips

Here, Ocasio-Cortez breaks down her routine into three steps: cleansing, treatments, and moisturiser. For the first, she suggested double-cleansing [7], but for anyone feeling particularly lazy (*raises hand*), she suggested a non-alcohol-infused facial wipe to "GET IT OFF your face" — at the very least.

Next, onto toner and actives, which are basically "serums w/ active compounds (ex: Vitamin C, retinol, w/e)," she wrote. "They should be in the layer closest to your skin after toner.

Finally, hydration: "Use a moisturiser that works with your skin. I find moisturiser to be one of the most personal steps bc everyone's skin is different and it's like finding jeans that fit."
