Earlier this Summer, singer Alicia Keys swore to stop wearing makeup. She had long had a complicated relationship with beauty products, confessing that she felt truly insecure without them.
"Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup," the 35-year-old mother of two told Lenny Letter. However, after a groundbreaking, bare-faced photo shoot for her upcoming album, she decided to quit wearing cosmetics completely. "I don't want to cover up anymore," she explained. "Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing."
We have to hand it to Alicia. While we would have inevitably backed down from such a bold declaration, she's sticking to her word. The musician stepped out at the 2016 BET Awards without a single speck of foundation, mascara, or even brow pencil . . . and she looked positively luminous. But even better than that, she looked happy.
She has clearly come a long way from feeling like she "was not good enough for the world to see." Her expression of sheer joy just might inspire you to go on your own makeup-free journey — or at least skip wearing foundation one day this week. Now if only she would share her skin care regimen with us . . .
