4 Hairstyle Trends Everyone Will Be Wearing This Autumn, According to the Pros

08/09/2019 - 09:40 AM

For every messy, straight-from-the-beach, IDGAF hairstyle you pulled out this Summer [1], there's an Autumn equivalent waiting around the corner to zhuzh it up. (We'd like to think of the season as the Jonathan Van Ness to your fourth-day topknot [2], but, um, in that fun, equally aspirational way.)

"During the Summer, people tend to let go of the rules and set their hair's natural texture free [3]," said Devin Toth [4], hairstylist at SGK Salon in NYC. "However, Autumn hair embodies chic, clean sophistication and people give it a little more attention. Your vibe can be playful, edgy, or even ruffled by a hat and scarf [5], but ultimately your hair this season will require and deserve a little more je ne sis quoi during the morning preparation, because it won't just be tucked away anymore — it will be at the forefront of your overall style."

Rest assured: just because the days of undone beachy hair [6] have gone by way of Summer Friday's and rooftop hangs, doesn't mean the hair forecast will be time-consuming. In fact, we've asked Toth and Ashley Streicher [7], celebrity hairstylist and Sun Bum [8] brand ambassador, to break down the Autumn hairstyle trends that are easy (maybe just not. . . get-up-and-go easy).

Autumn Hair Trend: Half-Up Hairstyle

One of Summer's biggest hairstyle trends is getting a seasonal upgrade: the half-up, half-down style [9]. "When I think of Autumn hair, I think of purposeful volume," said Toth, and the perfect way to get it is by pulling a section of hair all the way up on the crown of the head. (To give it a little more oomph, he suggests backcombing before securing with an elastic.) "I wouldn't be surprised to see this fashion-forward Gossip Girl [10] hairstyle everywhere these next few months."

Autumn Hair Trend: Bows

Unless you've managed to avoid the beauty at every major retailer, you've probably already gleaned that hair accessories are a huge trend [11] right now. The particular type of accessory that'll be blowing up your Instagram feeds this Autumn, however, are bows. "If you're using a bow as an accessory, use textured ribbon," said Streicher. "I love velvet because it lends to Fall fashion and you can really go for it by using darker colours. I love adding a little texture in the hair [12], pulling a few pieces back effortlessly, and then tying a knot or putting a bow on it."

Doth agrees that bows are going to be huge this season, adding that "the most coveted, aspirational place to splurge on your signature, statement bow would definitely be Jennifer Behr's Bow Shop [13]," he said. "You can pin the side of your hair back with a bow or place it just above a ponytail."

If you have short hair [14], and the length doesn't lend itself to a bow, Streicher has a suggestion: "I love the idea of keeping the hair sleek and adding a beret," she said. "Short hair can sometimes seem limiting, so adding a great accessory is great for Autumn."

Autumn Hair Trend: Low Ponytail

One style both Streicher and Toth agree will reign supreme this upcoming season: a loose, low ponytail [15]. "This is a great Autumn trend we will be seeing," said Streicher. "It's been seen on the runway a lot and it's because it's super elegant and a nice change from the high ponytails and buns you see during the warmer months."

When recreating this look, keep in mind that you'll want to — like all Autumn styles — keep it sleek and polished. "Again, this trend is more contrived and less effortless," said Toth.

Autumn Hair Trend: a Fringe

"A lot of people will be adding fringe to long and medium hair lengths," said Streicher. "I love the textured, Bardot-looking bang for staying on trend with the shag [16]. Adding a fringe for Autumn is much easier as the weather starts to cool down, because when it's hot its hard having hair in your face."
