Popsugar Beauty Shopping List Beauty Trends For Spring 2018 8 Beauty Trends You Can Actually Rock This Spring 16 March 2018 by Wendy Gould Image Source: IMAXTREE / Matteo Valle As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work. Fashion week may work a year ahead of schedule, but that doesn't mean you can't grab some of the beauty trends and work them into your world right now. Honestly, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to fashion and beauty, and we say run with inspiration wherever you find it! From bold neon makeup and glittery lids to understated glamour and sheer hues, we're showcasing eight beauty trends from FW18 runways that we predict will be coming to a neighbourhood in the coming months. 1 Vintage Glamour Image Source: IMAXTREE / Matteo Valle The trend: Vintage Glamour The breakdown: While we saw a lot of retrotastic, funky looks saunter down the runway this season, luxe glamour still held its ground. For example, at Tadashi Shoji models wore a golden wash of color from lash line to brow bone with the color softly sheering out around the edges. The lips featured a classic, blue-leaning red that was perfectly painted on with a tiny brush. Add the rolling, vintage-inspired waves and you've got the perfect look for all your upscale 2018 party needs. Get the look: Apply a cream or liquid gold eye shadow across the entire lid with a buffing brush, diffusing around the edges. Go back in again with the same brush and color, this time concentrating on only the lid to add a bit more intensity. The MAC Cosmetics team used Bling Thing in Time to Twerk, which launches in Winter 2018. For lips, reach for your favorite classic blue-red and apply to hydrated, lined lips. MAC used Drunken Cherry from their Trend Forecast Fall 2018 palette. For hair, use a 1-inch curling iron to curl 2-inch sections of hair and pin until cooled. Release, apply a fine mist of hair spray, and gently brush out. P.S. Backstage at this show, we spotted actual old school hair curlers with the garage sale price tag still attached. 2 Retro Hair Accessories Image Source: IMAXTREE / Alessandro Viero The trend: Retro Hair Accessories The breakdown: Perhaps one of the most buzzed about beauty trends that emerged from fashion week was the plethora of old school hair accessories models rocked down the runway. Guido, the hairstylist at Alexander Wang, resurrected the "claw clip" (which some people are calling the banana clip) and paired it with gelled hair. Tom Ford's models sported mock mullets and Lurex headbands, and stretchy hair comb accessories were worn at Prabal Gurung. Thanks to street style and Instagram, the scrunchy has also made a comeback. Get the look: The world is your oyster when it comes to incorporating these retro hair accessories into your #OOTD. A slick high or low ponytail will work with all of the above. Try it with a little gel or hairspray to tame flyaways. 3 Neon Eye Makeup Image Source: IMAXTREE / Greg Scaffidi The trend: Neon Eye Makeup The breakdown: This has easily been one of the most colorful seasons we've seen in the last few years, and it's breeding a lot of fun, unexpected looks and color combinations. From the futuristic-meets-'80s look at Jeremy Scott to near-alienesque vibes at Naeem Khan to the neon colors sported at Christian Siriano, designers did not shy away from the broader spectrum of hues. This trend has already extended into the real world thanks to new makeup launches and collaborations between some of the industry's most creative minds and brands. Get the look: Just before his show, Christian Siriano announced that he and e.l.f. Cosmetics came together to create a bright and wallet-friendly makeup collection. For the look pictured here, makeup artist Polly Osmond prepped skin with the brand's Jelly Spritz, Hydrating Booster Drops, and Hydrogel Under Eye Masks. Throwing rules to the wind, she applied the e.l.f. x Christian Siriano Liquid Matte Lipstick in Electric Fuschia on the upper eyes, blending out with a brush. She then combined the navy and turquoise shades from the e.l.f. x Christian Siriano Eyeshadow Palette in Bold Bouquet to brighten and further blend. Lips were kept glossy and hydrated. 4 Crimped Hair Image Source: IMAXTREE / IMAXTREE.COM The trend: Crimped Hair The breakdown: Along with retro hair accessories have come a plethora of throwback hairstyles ranging from faux hawks to rocker waves. One of our favorites: the crimped locks we spotted at Libertine, which were created with a legit crimper. Get the look: For this look, Sassoon stylists crimped hair layer by layer to create max volume and texture. Then they went back in with a regular iron to create a gorgeous finger wave pattern on the outermost layer of hair, keeping the top two inches of hair straight and pinning them down. To create that lightweight, voluminous texture, stylists applied Kérastase Densifique Densimorphose Thickening Treatment Mousse at the part and brushed it through, then applied a flexible hold hairspray to keep everything soft to the touch and in place. 5 Playful Nail Art Image Source: IMAXTREE / Matteo Valle The trend: Playful Nail Art The breakdown: If anyone out there was thinking that nail art went away — think again! Though the art has taken a more streamlined, simplified turn, it's definitely not going anywhere soon. At Tadashi Shoji, models wore burgundy nail polish with a metallic sheen finish, which was then topped with a black fishnet-like material. Nails were bedazzled with Swarovski crystals by the Deborah Lippman team at Creatures of Comfort, and at Naeem Khan digits got an oil slick-meets-chrome treatment via press-ons. Pictured above is the neon animal print nails created by Miss Pop and Essie at Jeremy Scott. Get the look: For the nails pictured here, we got the full scoop and a demonstration backstage from Miss Pop herself. It's easier than it looks, too! Simply take your choice color — she used Essie Tart Deco, Play Date, and Bachelorette Bash — and lightly draw u-shapes all over the nail. Let it dry, then seal with a top coat. If you prefer nail art easier than that, there are always press-ons! 6 Glittery Lids Image Source: IMAXTREE / Matteo Valle The trend: Glittery Lids The breakdown: Bust out the Kira Kira app 'cause 2018 is going to be a glitter party for your eyelids. From Oscar de la Renta's sheer pink eyes topped with white iridescent glitter, to chunky black glitter smoky eyes at Libertine, to holographic glitter atop nude lids at Milly, there was no shortage of sparkle. We've also seen the glitter lid trend continue to hit other fashion week runways. For example, at LFW's London College of Fashion show, MAC Cosmetics artists used a not-yet-launched iridescent glitter pigment that's sent the internet into a frenzy. Get the look: The most important part of making glitter work is, well, ensuring it stays put. For that, you'll need the proper medium. At Oscar de la Renta, MAC makeup artists used Grand Illusion Glossy Liquid Lip Color to help glitter adhere, and at Milly (pictured) they pressed MAC's Mixing Medium Shine onto the lid before pressing on MAC Glitter in 3D Silver. 7 Curtain Bangs Image Source: IMAXTREE / Armando Grillo The trend: Curtain Bangs The breakdown: Bangs, in general, are having a serious moment right now. Curtain bangs, though, are particularly trendy. For those unware, the term refers to the curtain-like appearance of the fringe, which is often seen parted in the center and swept to either side, or it can all be swept to just one side. We saw them on the NYFW runway at Jason Wu, and lots of Hollywood stars are debuting the look, themselves, including Kirsten Dunst, Sofia Vergara, Chloë Grace Moretz, Alexa Chung, and January Jones. Get the look: Step number one: secure a really good hairstylist who has the ability to create flattering fringe that seamlessly blends into the rest of your hair. Step two: round up an arsenal of products and styling tools that will help you create soft, touchable bangs that stay where you put them. Don't forget a dry shampoo to keep them fresh since they'll get oily quicker than the rest of your hair. To "train your bangs" to part in the center, style and clip them on either side of your head. Apply hair spray, let it dry, then remove the clips. 8 Sheer, Hydrated Lips Image Source: IMAXTREE / Matteo Scarpellini The trend: Sheer, Hydrated Lips The breakdown: Bold lip color is definitely here to stay, but a sheer wash of color or ultra-hydrating lip balm can make a bold statement, too. Whether it's just a hint of lipstick patted into the lips for a touch of color, tinted lip gloss, or a super moisturizing balm, the goal is to let your natural lip color shine through. Get the look: Start by exfoliating your lips, which is an oft forgotten but important step you should take no matter how much color you're about to apply. You can use a premade lip exfoliator, or make your own with a bit of olive or coconut oil mixed with sugar. Follow up with your choice of lip balm and keep it handy through the day for touch ups. Backstage at NYFW, we saw Rosebud Salve (a classic fave!), Maybelline's Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm, and a new NARS Orgasm Lip Balm that's set to launch later this year.
