18 Editor-Approved Face Masks For Every Skin Type

22/04/2020 - 02:45 PM

As beauty editors, there are certain skincare products that are very important to us: SPF (which should be worn every single day — no exceptions [1]), our trusty retinol, and our absolute favourite face masks.

Why do we love face masks? Well, they can make our complexion superglowy when it's feeling dull [2], soothe angry spots and irritation in times of need, and give us that heavenly postfacial feeling while we're currently unable to get to the spa. In short, it's the one skincare product that's both practical and indulgent — a luxurious treat that not only helps our skin, but our moods and piece of mind, too.

Thing is, there are literally hundreds of skincare masks out there. There are masks in jars and masks on sheets; masks that hydrate and masks that deep clean; masks that are high-end and masks on the high street, but they all promise the same thing: visible results within a matter of minutes. And while it's fun to experiment, it can definitely be confusing (and expensive) if you're unsure of what mask you want or what mask your skin needs.

Now that we've got more time our hands, we've also been using a lot more face masks, which is why we decided to round up all of our top favourites. We already had a robust list of face masks we love — after all, it's been our job as beauty editors to try hundreds of them over the years — but since lockdown [3], we've added a few more to the mix. This comprehensive list includes face masks at every price point and for every skin concern, whether you're looking for a surge of moisture or to deep clean your pores [4] within an inch of their lives. Read on to discover our editor-approved masks that we rate for brightening, pore-clearing, line-smoothing, and hydrating.

Hydrating: Drunk Elephant F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial Masque

Drunk Elephant soothes your parched skin with the overnight F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial Masque [5] (£44). The ingredient list is jam-packed with some superhydrators like niacinamide, sodium PCA, plant squalane, five forms of ceramides, and vitamin F, which is where the product name comes from. Vitamin F isn't actually a vitamin but rather refers to the two fatty acids (linolenic and linoleic), both of which help repair and hydrate the skin.

Hydrating: Fresh Rose Face Mask

One of my all-time favourites is the Fresh Rose Face Mask [6] (£21). The cooling, gel texture of this mask is a total dream, particularly if you have dry, thirsty skin. It contains real rose petals and pure rose water, in addition to aloe vera gel and cucumber extract for the ultimate soothing mask.

Hydrating: Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

If there's one mask always present on Instagram shelfies, it's the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask [7] (£22.50). If dewy, hydrated skin is what you're after, here it is, housed in a cute blue tube. Packed full of vitamin C, niacinamide, chestnut extract, and green tea extract, this formula simultaneously hydrates while minimising the appearance of pores and blemishes. Our favourite way to use it is layered over our nightly serum (and even over our regular face cream if our skin is exceptionally dry) to really lock in all of the moisture and hardworking ingredients.

Hydrating: Tropic Skincare Deep Hydration Soothing Cooling Mask

I wouldn't necessarily call my skin very sensitive, but like a lot of people, I'm prone to the odd flare-up. If I'm struggling with breakouts, dryness, and irritation all at once but still want to give my skin a little boost using a face mask, I always turn to the Tropic Skincare Deep Hydration Soothing Cooling Mask [8] (£20). The ultracreamy formula contains allantoin and resurrection flower to hydrate the skin, and wild superberries, which the brand claims help brighten your complexion. Like all Tropic products, this mask is 100 percent vegan.

The smell of a mask is also important to me. While I do favour something that's slightly scented, anything overpowering and I'm not keen. This one has a light, sweet (but not too sweet) scent, which for me, is perfect. Oh, and the tub has lasted me months, thanks to the Tropic Spatula [9] (£6), which keeps you from scooping out way too much.

Hydrating: Wishful Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask

"The Wishful Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask [10] (£8) is the second launch from Huda Kattan's new skincare brand [11], and it's hands down one of the most hydrating sheet masks I've ever tried," says POPSUGAR content director Sophia Panych. The formula — which the brand describes as an essence versus a serum — is chock-full of good-for-your-skin ingredients like glycerin, niacinamide, althaea rosea flower extract, sodium hyaluronate (the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid), aloe vera, caffeine, and allantoin (another known moisturising ingredient). And because the sheet itself is made from a double-layer fibre, not only does it hold onto the essence for dear life (versus traditional sheet masks that drip all over you) but it also stays on your face if you want to multitask and, say, mask and do the dishes. After 10 minutes of wearing this, your face practically feels and looks like baby skin.

Hydrating: Farmacy Honey Potion

Farmacy Honey Potion [12] (£36) isn't just a treat for the skin — it makes a great at-home facial experience. After applying the honey mask and massaging it in, the jelly-like formula will turn creamy and slowly begin to heat up and soothe dry skin. The warming sensation really gives this mask a professional facial feeling (well, as professional as a 10-minute at-home facial can get). It's packed full of — you guessed it — honey, which is sourced from the hives on Farmacy's own farm.

Hydrating: Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask

Yes, the price tag of Sisley's Black Rose Cream Mask [13] (£110) is shocking. But so are the results the morning after slathering it all over your skin before bed. The formula, which features shea butter, black rose extracts, vitamin B5, and a handful of botanical extracts and oils, leaves your skin softer, brighter, and more even in tone. Plus, it gives your complexion the perfect amount of dewiness — shiny enough that your skin looks healthy and fresh but not so shiny that you look like you bathed in a vat of olive oil.

Hydrating: Eve Lom Rescue Mask

"My skin is generally sensitive, acne-prone, and dry (the problem skin trifecta), so sometimes I just want a mask that isn't packed with actives but gives me a nice pampering moment," says POPSUGAR assistant editor Ange Law. "The Eve Lom Rescue Mask [14] (£35) is exactly that mask. The main ingredient is kaolin clay, but unlike a lot of other clay masks I've tried, it doesn't feel like it's drawing every ounce of impurity and moisture from my skin. After using this mask, my skin feels extremely soft, a little bit glowy (in a lit-from-within way), and soothed. I always follow it up with a juicy facial oil and the rest of my usual skincare products."

Cleansing and Acne-Fighting: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask

Caudalie Instant Detox Mask [15] (£22) pretty much comes out on top when it comes to editor-approved clay masks. The secret is the gentle-yet-effective ingredients including rose clay, which draws out grime; papaya enzyme, which brightens the skin; and tannins, which remove excess oils from the skin without drying it out. "It works wonders for calming down those under-the-skin spots when used before bedtime," says POPSUGAR assistant editor Kara Kia.

Cleansing and Acne-Fighting: Erno Laszlo Pore Cleansing Clay Mask

"Fun fact: Marilyn Monroe was a patient of Dr. Erno Laszlo and a fan of his brand, so I always feel superluxurious when I dip into my favourite product in the range, the Erno Laszlo Pore Cleansing Clay Mask [16] (£45)", says Panych. "I've tried quite a few clay masks in my day, and this is the first one that, after I use it, I can truly see a difference in my skin (and doesn't suck every last bit of moisture from my face). Not only does it look less greasy and spots look less angry and red but the overall texture of my skin looks better and feels incredibly soft to the touch."

Cleansing and Acne-Fighting:The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution [17] (£6) means business. Serious business. Don't be fooled by thinking the affordable price tag doesn't mean this isn't a very powerful acid peel. Technically, this may not fall under the same mask umbrella as other products in the list, but it's the treatment I turn to in place of where I'd use another mask in my skincare routine. The peel is packed with both AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), which exfoliate the outer layer of the skin and BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids), which reach deeper to help clear the skin of congestion. In just 5-10 minutes (never longer than 10 minutes), blemishes appear reduced (for me, this is especially true for those pesky under-the-skin spots), and the complexion appears brighter.

Since this is such a strong acid peel, it is not recommended on sensitive skin types or those with any cracked or peeling patches. It's definitely one to use with caution, but when used right, can be a total game changer in your routine.

Cleansing and Acne-Fighting: Kate Somerville Eradikate Mask

When I have an active breakout, I actually try to leave it alone as much as possible. I find that doing too much can often be worse than just sticking to the basics of cleansing and moisturising with the products I know work. But if I feel a breakout brewing, there's one mask I whip out as soon as humanly possible: Kate Somerville Eradikate Mask [18] (£46), which you might recognise from its famous sidekick: the EradiKate Blemish Spot Treatment [19] (£22).

Colloidal sulphur, the main ingredient, helps clear congestion and clogged pores; and while that's working, the addition of oat helps to soothe irritation. The mask applies like a thick cream and quickly starts to bubble and foam (which makes great selfie material), working into the pores to clear out the gunk.

Cleansing and Acne-Fighting: Sand & Sky Purifying Pink Clay Mask

As far as clay masks go, the Sand & Sky Purifying Pink Clay Mask [20] (£42) is one of our favourites, and it's not just an editor-approved favourite. In April, the brand saw a 100 percent increase in sales of the mask.

The mask promises to detoxify and brighten skin while also tightening pores and boosting radiance in only 10 minutes. And while, you technically can't change the size of your pores, as far as brightening and helping to decongest pores goes, we'd have to agree with its claims. The pink clay mask clings to pores to help draw out impurities (see photos for evidence! [21]) without completely drying the skin out.

Alya Australian Pink Clay Mask

Six months before the Alya Australian Pink Clay Mask [22] (£30) officially launched in the UK via Beauty Bay, Brits shipped £1.3 million worth of the mask over. What's all the hype about? Sure, the pale pink colour of the mask (reminiscent of bubblegum or ballet tutus) and the fact it's both vegan and cruelty free probably have something to do with it. But it's also because the formula truly works wonder on dull, stressed out skin. Kaolin clay is the first ingredient on the label, which sops up excess oil and grease, aloe vera and witch hazel soothe and treat spots, while lactic acid and fruit enzymes break down dead skin cells. Leave this on for just 10 minutes and you'll notice your skin looks brighter, feels softer, and your spots look less red and angry than before you put it on.

Brightening/Exfoliating: Ole Henriksen Phat Glow Facial

The Ole Henriksen Phat Glow Facial Mask [23] (£42) promises one thing: a phat glow, and that it delivers. The mask contains PHAs (polyhydroxy acids), chemical exfoliants that, like AHAs and BHAs, gets rid of dead skin cells but with less redness and irritation than its AHA and BHA brothers. This is because the molecule is bigger, meaning it cannot penetrate as deeply into the skin. The mask also contains Nordic birch sap to help hydrate, pink bentonite clay to clarify the pores, and chia seed oil to plump the skin. If you're looking for relatively instant results, this is your guy.

Brightening/Exfoliating: MZ Skin Radiance & Renewal Mask

Another fast-acting, radiance-boosting formula is the MZ Skin Radiance & Renewal Mask [24] (£110), which is a bit spenny — but for good reason. The mask contains 10 percent AHA (so you'll feel the teensiest bit of tingling upon application), as well as papaya enzymes to deeply exfoliate, and arabinogalactans — which is an ingredient derived from the plant species nasturtium — to increase oxygenation and help give the skin an incredible glow in as little as 15 minutes.

Brightening/Exfoliating:Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask

If you're looking for an all-natural mask that gives spa-worthy results, Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask [25] (£57) is the one. The key ingredients in the formula — which has a decadent, jam-like consistency — include pink French clay, white willow extract, and pomegranate enzymes, which together help cleanse, exfoliate, and absorb excess oil.

This mask is great for people whose skin can't tolerate traditional at-home peels but still want to deeply exfoliate and tone; although, if your skin is typically reactive, you definitely want to do a patch test before slathering it on your face as the naturally derived ingredients are still quite strong.

Brightening/Exfoliating: Origins Original Skin Retexturing Mask

If your cleanser just isn't cutting it, Origins Original Skin Retexturing Mask [26] (£22) will do the trick to draw out excess oils and gunk and minimise the appearance of your pores in one go. Formulated with rose clay, Canadian willowherb, and jojoba beads, it exfoliates and helps to draw out grime from the pores all at once.

Brightening/Exfoliating: Susanne Kaufmann Glow Mask

"I have a sample size of Susanne Kaufmann Glow Mask [27] (£59) that I use very sparingly," says Kia. "It's an incredible formula that I reserve for a big night out (or in). After 20 minutes of this stuff on your face, you'll have an unbelievable glow — creating a perfect base for makeup."
