The Body Shop is one step closer to becoming an even more sustainable brand. Back in 1993, The Body Shop founder Dame Anita Roddick introduced an in-store recycle-and-refill scheme, and now the brand is reinventing it. This time, not only to help the planet, but to help workers, too. With the reintroduction of its recycling scheme, you can return your empty products in exchange for money off your next purchase in an effort to reduce waste, re-purpose materials, and save you some money on your favourite products.

As of June 5, for every five empty bottles you return to a Body Shop store (a full list of participating UK stores is listed here [3]), you'll get a £5 voucher to spend in-store, and of course, the comfort of knowing your products are being recycled properly.

"Plastic pollution is a global crisis and the planet needs our help more than ever."

So, how does The Body Shop recycle the old products, exactly? According to a statement on their website, once the products are returned to any store, the brand's recycling partner TerraCycle turns the "raw materials that can be recycled into new products or re-purposed into new items like watering cans and children's playgrounds." And it's not just the planet that benefits from this initiative: it benefits workers, specifically the 1.5 million waste pickers in India, too. The Body Shop's Community Trade initiative aims to tackle the poor living and working conditions and discrimination. In a short film posted on Instagram, the Body Shop announced, "It's time to tackle the plastic crisis differently and celebrate these unsung heroes that are helping clear the world of plastic pollution."

Even better, it's not just The Body Shop products that the scheme accepts. You can also recycle other branded beauty products. However, this will not entitle the Recycle Rewards. So, next time you've finished your products, wash the empty bottles and return them to your local store to help save the planet and the waste-picking community.
