Like it or not, there's no denying a significant focus is placed on looks in Hollywood. Whether they're trying to keep the press (and fans) on their toes, concealing their true ages, or getting a "breakover," many celebs switch up their hair colours [3] the way the rest of us change our socks.
You can hardly blame them: Tinseltown is home to a number of actresses, models, and singers whose careers got a serious jumpstart from a dye job. That said, there are a few stars who don't dye their hair. A far cry from the Katy Perrys and Rihannas of the world, these ladies stay tried and true to their natural hues — and they own it. Salma Hayek
Truth be told, Salma Hayek [4] would look beautiful no matter what colour her hair was. But she doesn't feel the need to wear it as anything other than the dark brunette hue she was born with.
The 50-year-old actress recently told The New York Times: "It's my natural colour, and it's my natural white hairs . . . One of the reasons I don't dye my hair [5] is because I don't have the patience to sit through it. I don't want to spend what's left of my youth pretending I'm younger and then not enjoying life."
Hard to argue with that logic.
Kendall Jenner
In what may be one of the most shocking truths to come out of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kendall Jenner revealed in the family's Calvin Klein ad [6] that she has never dyed her hair. Yes, she said never.
As a supermodel with runway and campaign experience with the biggest names in fashion, Kendall's tried on virtually every type of look imaginable. It would only seem logical given her profession — and her hair chameleon sisters — that she would've tried the dye treatment at some point. But alas, this beauty keeps it real.
Tracee Ellis Ross
To be clear: The Black-ish [7] star has taken the hair colour plunge before (inspired by Lucille Ball, she briefly went red). But Ross has stuck to her natural hue [8] since.
In a 2012 interview with Essence, she said "I loved it, but truthfully I am at heart with what God naturally gave me," said Ross. "I just feel more comfortable [in my natural hair colour] so I went back to it."
Jessica Chastain
The Molly's Game actress is willing to change up her hair colour for roles — by wearing a wig, that is. She prefers to keep her signature red locks untainted [9] and untouched by dye.
In a 2017 Refinery 29interview, she explained "As a child, I didn't want to be different — I wanted to look the same as everyone else because I didn't want to be singled out . . . I was ridiculed for having red hair; for having freckles. But whatever you are ridiculed about that makes you different is what you'll celebrate in the future. If I wanted to dye my hair, I could, but I realised that's who I am, and my differences [make me] special."
Yes. Ma'am.
Julianne Moore
She's arguably one of Hollywood's most famous gingers, and Julianne Moore seemingly would like to keep it that way. That doesn't mean Moore doesn't do little touch-ups: In 2014 she told Redbook: "I didn't start [colouring my hair] until about five years ago [10], when some greys came in. There's a spot in the front of my head that, if I left it alone, would be a grey streak. I'm not ready for that yet!"
Tweaks aside, Moore doesn't appear to want to change her famous colour any time soon. "I got blonde highlights in my 30s, but I didn't like how they looked," she said.
Jamie Lee Curtis
As the child of Hollywood stars Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis has a deep understanding of the power of image. And now, she's taking charge of her own, by going natural.
Curtis told Everyday Health "The epiphany came when I was sitting in a hair salon thinking, 'What the eff am I doing putting a chemical on my head that burns? [11]' My short hair keeps growing in, and I was having to cut it and touch it up all the time. I found beauty salons humiliating. I'd be sitting there in a smock that didn't look good on me. I'd have crap in my hair with tin foil, which looks ridiculous. It didn't ever feel right."
Sounds like a good enough reason to us.
