Special-effects makeup is getting more and more terrifying, and I'm totally into it. Makeup artists can make anything scary, even sweet little cookie cutters. Ruby Mitchell is an 18-year-old SFX makeup artist studying theatrical and special-effects hair and media makeup, and damn is she good at it. One look at your Instagram feed and you'll be excited for Halloween already (and probably a little bit grossed out).
Ruby told POPSUGAR she gets her inspiration from "the different makeup in TV shows and films and trying to re-create them. I ordered some products online and just started playing around with them and taught myself through watching YouTube and Instagram tutorials." She also let us in on where she finds inspiration for her looks, including Ellimacs, Raniratt, Amanda Prescott, and lots more (*finds on Instagram immediately*). The aspect of SFX makeup Ruby likes to create the most is taking "everyday household objects [she] finds around the house to create different injuries." The effects are so terrifying; her work will even make you have nightmares about Lego.
Ruby's favourite go-to products include Ben Nye Nose and Scar Wax and Mouldlife Sculpt Gel to create wounds. She also loves the Skin Illustrator Palette for colour matching wax to skin tone to make her work look more realistic. She's well and truly got us fooled!
So, Ruby, where can we book a Halloween special with you to get our gore on?
