Create your corset plait by crossing string between two plait, just like you're putting new shoelaces in your trainers. Toronto-based hair stylist Ariba Pervaiz suggests when using finer threads, "tie each end to a bobby pin and use the pin to push the string through the braid." But wide, satin ribbons will slide through your plaits seamlessly.
