Is the Dyson Airwrap Worth The Money? See It Tested Out on Different Hair Types

28/12/2018 - 10:16 AM

You've probably seen the Dyson Airwrap in the last couple of months. The magic styling tool aims to make curling and styling your hair a total breeze (and a pretty nifty futuristic one at that). If you're obsessed with getting blow dries at the hairdresser, or you do your own [1] when you can but just want to get your day off to a good start [2], you'll probably be pretty tempted by the nifty gadget, which also promises to be less damaging to the hair.

But then you see the price. The Airwrap starts at £400 [2]. For a hair dryer. Even if you've got a monthly blow dry habit, that's still a huge amount of money to spend on a hair styler, so it has to be absolutely life transforming. But maybe it is? Luckily, plenty of people have done the hard work and tried it out on a number of hair types, from short fine hair to long natural curls. Take a look through these video reviews and decide for yourself if you think it'll work for you.

Sam Ozkural — Long, Thick and Curly (Slightly Frizzy) Hair

Sam finds her hair doesn't dry as fast as Dyson says it will but believes the tool is definitely worth it if you love a blow dry and spend a lot of money on them.

Amber Ansah — Thick, Long, Natural Curly Hair

Amber is pleasantly surprised by the speed at which the soft smoothing brush straightens and dries her hair versus a regular blow dry. However, the curls didn't turn out so well.

Leighannsays — Very Long, Quite Damaged Hair

Though her hair does look pretty (if a bit more '70s than she'd usually go for), she found the tool takes a long time to produce results and points out that it's also not travel-friendly.

Tati — Long, Straight Hair

Tati really dislikes the product and struggles to use it. But, she got a lot of heat in the comments (it is YouTube, after all), for not learning how to use it properly before trying . . .

Tati — Long, Straight Hair, Take 2

Tati responded to the feedback by giving the tool another chance. Though the results are better, she still has reservations.

Bonjour Aika — Short, Fluffy Hair

The verdict? It's easy to use, quick, and gets a soft wave rather than a tight curl. This isn't her first time using the dryer, and it shows.

Rachel Calloway — Thick, Curly, Natural Hair

Rachel tries out the curler and brush attachments to see if she can smooth out her hair but ends up reaching for her hair dryer instead. It's safe to say this one wasn't a win.

Asian Features — Fine Hair With a Fringe

Using the narrow barrel on the fringe really gives the hair bounce, but there are some flat sections at the back that she's concerned about. However, like many reviewers, she has concerns about the price and extra time required to get a really polished look.

Hadia Ahmad — Thick, Dry Hair

Hadia has high hopes for the tool and loves the volume and waves that it gives, but finds due to the length and texture of her hair that the tool doesn't quite deliver the results of a blow dry.

Beauty Investigator UK — Fine, Damaged Hair

In this review, the curls maintain volume and are nice and glossy, plus they hold up very nicely. She doesn't think it feels as damaging as straighteners, but it's hard to handle at times and only offers a larger curl.

Ms Precious Marie — Midlength Layered Wig

Marie has a lot to say about the techniques needed to use this tool correctly, but you totally see the results. She's a fan of the tool, even though it's expensive.

Gleamy Gleamy Glam Glam — Long Curly Hair

Want to see the smoothing brush in action? Beauty vlogger Gleamy Gleamy Glam Glam shows how it smooths out her long, curly hair. She's a fan of the tool, although she does think it takes her a lot longer than usual blow-drying.

Milabu — Shoulder Length, Fine Hair

Milana seems to have the type of hair that Dyson designed this tool for. She describes it as "magical," and the results do look great on her shorter hair.

Nicole Guerriero — Mid-length, Layered Hair

Nicole feels like the tool re-creates the look of a fresh blow-dry but notes there really is a learning curve. She's definitely a fan for adding volume without teasing.

Kirbie Johnson — Long, Fine, Layered Hair

It takes Kirbie a few tries to get the knack of the tool (and she notes it's much easier to do one side than the other), but once she's learned the technique, she's really happy with the results. She even shows the second day look, to show how the curls drop.

Melissa Dagger — Long, Straight Hair

Melissa's so excited but not expecting too much for the money. However, unlike the other reviewers, she reckons the tool is a huge timesaver.

Andreas Choice — Curly Hair

It takes a while for Andrea to get the technique, but when she does, she's impressed with the results and the smoothness of the curls.

Farah Dhukai — Superlong, Slightly Wavy Hair

Farah couldn't resist purchasing the product, but after two hours' work, she wasn't impressed with how it worked on her hair (which falls past her waist). She recommends it for shorter hair, with fewer layers.

Jenn Brown — Damaged, Bleached Long Hair

Jenn really gives the tool a full review, trying multiple tools on her hair. She doesn't have the easiest time with the wrapping mechanism, but she likes the bouncy curl. However, like many people with long, thick hair, she finds it hugely time-consuming.

Kerry Whelpdale — Shoulder-length Fine Hair That Loses a Style Quickly

Kerry was impressed by the soft waves she got and discovered a technique using the brush to add volume at the roots. However, the waves dropped very quickly, something she finds happens a lot with her hair. Switching to the smaller tool helped with this.
