I Challenged Myself to Re-Create the Incredible Makeup From Euphoria, and It Was Hard

06/08/2019 - 09:20 PM

When my boyfriend asked me if I'd like to watch HBO's Euphoria [1], which stars Zendaya [2] and is produced by Drake, I knew it was going to be good. What I didn't expect, however, was that I would be shouting at the TV every episode some variation of, "That makeup is incredible!"

The stellar beauty moments [3] are courtesy of makeup artist Doniella Davy [4], who designed looks for each of the characters that ranged from small, hand-drawn face tattoos to full-on glittering lids. Falling in love with these looks made me want to be more adventurous with my makeup. I had been experimenting with colour more, but I decided to go one step further and re-create my favourite looks from the show in real life.

Ahead, see how I wore three of the characters' makeup looks.

Day 1: Jules's Neon Eye Makeup

Jules has some of the most fun makeup looks in the series, so it was hard to just pick one I wanted to try out. While finding the exact florescent hues that would match her neon look from episode two was frustrating (nothing seemed bright enough) and the look took a full 25 minutes, this was probably my favourite of the three. To really get the brightness I wanted, I found that cream products were essential. I ultimately settled on ColourPop Super Shock Pressed Pigment in Fizz [5] (£5) for the green and Flower Beauty Pop! Fanatic Eye Pigment in Wham [6] (£7) for the hot pink. To make it even more vibrant, I turned to the neon pink shade in Luna Magic Beauty's Uno Palette [7] (£21), Salud.

I got a lot of compliments from my coworkers, perhaps because neon hues [8] are super trendy at the moment, and I loved playing with colour. Considering I work in editorial, I think this look is one I'm likely to repeat.

Day 2: Cassie's Halloween Makeup

Maybe it's the fact that I am truly obsessed with Halloween [9], but when McKay didn't like Cassie's Alabama Worley from True Romance costume that she worked so hard on, my heart sank into my stomach — especially because the look is straight fire. While this makeup probably should have been reserved for a night out rather than a day at the office, I needed to try to replicate it. This one took a good 40 minutes but was totally worth it. I drew out the shape of the shadow in a blue eyeliner and filled it in with the Flower Beauty Pop Fanatic Eye Pigment in Splash [10] (£7) using a flat eye shadow brush. I darkened up the edges of the look with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Roxy [11] (£16) and used the brand's Heavy Metal Glitter Gel in Soul Love [12] (£17) to pack on the shine. I finished with a thin application of red gloss, some black liner, and false lashes.

This look was, by far, the most outside my comfort zone. For one thing, glitter can be a little itchy and isn't exactly something that can fly under the radar. While many of my coworkers did enjoy this look, my boyfriend literally said, "Bleh," when he saw me, so it was not a universal hit. As for myself, I thought this look was cool, but it made me a little uncomfortable (I had to keep reminding myself that my makeup was not going to be the weirdest thing anyone in New York City saw that day) and probably won't be a look I repeat.

Day 3: Maddy's Signature Eyeliner and Cherry Accent

Despite the full glam of this look, I found Maddy's makeup to be the most true to my personality. I am a huge fan of winged liner, so drawing on a big, intense wing with my handy Kat Von D Tattoo Liner [13] (£17) was a welcome challenge. To create the cherries, I used a little bit of the red Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in American Doll [14] (£20) and used a green eyeliner to create the stems. I placed some voluminous falsies on my eyes to truly get the Maddy treatment. I went about my day with little to no comments and even had a meeting with a dentist without anyone commenting on my cherry art. It was a welcome dramatisation of my go-to makeup.
