There are plenty of things to consider when getting married: choosing the right hairstyle [1], getting all of your expenses in order [2], picking the perfect hashtag [3], all while trying not to get a pimple days before your wedding [4] — the list goes on. But if your nuptials are taking place somewhere warm, there are a few additional things you might want to consider when it comes to your makeup.
"If you're getting married in a hot climate then you will need to consider how this might affect the performance of your makeup," makeup artist Hannah Martin [5] told POPSUGAR. The number one reason for this is perspiration, which can literally melt makeup off the face — not an ideal scenario when you've spent time, effort, and money on your wedding makeup. Keep reading to see Martin's top five tips for keeping your makeup in tiptop condition, despite the beautiful but blisteringly hot weather.
Ditch the Heavy Moisturiser
You might think more is more when it comes to moisturiser, but Martin says that's not the case when you've got a big event and you're going to be sweating. Opt for serums that pack a punch of hydration without the thick layers of moisturiser. Martin recommends Kheils Ultra Facial Moisturiser [7] (£24.50) as it's lightweight, hydrating, and provides just the right amount of slip (but not too much) before makeup application.
Use An Oil-Free Foundation
Choosing the correct foundation is key when it comes to makeup for the big day. Opting for a base that is oil-free or oil-controlling will reduce the amount of moisture interacting with the foundation causing it to slip and slide. Martin recommends Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Skin Foundation Stick [8] (£28, originally £32) for dryer skin types as it's not matte but will stay in place all day. For more oily skin types, she likes Estee Lauder Double Wear Light [9] (£33.50) and MAC Studio Fix Fluid [10] (£26).
Grab Some Mattifying Primer
Martin sings the praises of mattifying primer such as Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Primer Plus Mattifier [11] (£13) and applies this underneath and over the top of makeup to control any shine and excess perspiration.
Blot, Blot, Blot
Blotting is key, got it? It might sound simple but Martin suggests keeping blotting papers such as NYX Blotting Paper [12] (£4), Fenty Beauty Invisimatte Blotting Paper [13] (£8) on hand to absorb any excess oil while touching up any makeup and before photographs.
Too Much Perspiration, Too Little Time?
The final tip is to grab a hairdryer if the oil is out of control. If you're getting ready in hair and makeup and you start to perspire, Martin explained, "as odd as it might sound, put a hair dryer on a light setting and gently blow it over your face to dry it. It is far more effective at halting perspiration than trying to cool yourself with a fan."
