With the popularity of highlighters soaring, many brands are starting to come out with unique hues that differ from the more common champagne shades that dominate the shelves of beauty stores.
After seeing a few orange, hot pink, and purple highlighters, I wanted to give the shades a try but wasn't sure where to start. I headed to the Sephora Beauty Insider Community for some product recommendations and picked out a few of my own to wear for a week.
What I learned was pretty encourageing. Most of the hues are more wearable than I expected, but there are tricks to wearing each hue. Shop the products ahead and find out how to pull off orange, pink, and even rainbow hues.
Fenty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo
The Fenty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo ($36) was surprisingly easy to wear. The magenta hue gave the apples of my cheeks a rosy glow, and the orange highlight made me look sun-kissed. I wore my makeup the same way I normally do for work, but the added punch of colour on my cheeks amped up my everyday look.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dream Glow Kit
The metallic finish of Anastasia Beverly Hills's Dream Glow Kit ($45) creates a more dramatic set of highlighters. I chose to use the Sunshine shade, a yellow, to place on my cheekbones and eyes but skipped my usual lip colour and liquid liner. Although I loved the glamorous and bold effect of the shimmer, next time I will save this kit for a night look.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Prismatic Amethyst
If you're afraid to try a new colour of highlighter, the light purple hue of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Prismatic Amethyst ($38) is an excellent place to start. It isn't too far away from the champagne shades you're used to but is a bolder look. It's also really versatile and can be worn with your everyday makeup. I decided to wear this highlighter with all of my go-to natural makeup and a nude lip to make the subtle purple shimmer take centre stage.
Huda Beauty Winter Solstice Highlighter Palette
If you haven't been able to find a uniquely hued highlighter with enough shimmer for your taste, give the Huda Beauty Winter Solstice Highlighter Palette ($45) a try. These colours are packed with colour and shine and are easy to blend out. I think this palette would suit deeper skin tones more than lighter ones, and my Winter Rose shade ended up being more of an iridescent blush on my cheeks. Although I used this as a blush instead, I loved how it looked on my cheeks.
Too Faced Rainbow Strobe Highlighter
The Too Faced Rainbow Strobe Highlighter ($30) is almost too cute to use. To get the rainbow effect on my cheekbones, I swiped a wide fan brush on the pan and packed on the product. I then swept the colours across my cheeks in a straight motion to make sure the colours didn't melt together. The result is festival-ready cheekbones worthy of Instagram. After wearing it around, I definitely got a few strange looks. Next time, I will reserve this for a concert or festival.
