How to create big, back-combed catwalk hair

Hair How-To: Candyfloss Hair

Shelve the straightening irons! The new hair trend on the block is all about matte texture and huge, cartoon proportions. The Spring/Summer catwalks featured hair-do's that were big and backcombed - from disheveled up-do's at Roberto Cavalli and John Galliano, to whispy knots and ridiculously exaggerated piles of hair at Moschino and Peter Jensen. Admittedly, this is not the easiest look to pull off, but take a tip from Amy Winehouse with her trademark beehive, or just keep hair matted and slightly messy like Mary-Kate Olsen does.

  • STEP 1: Start by working a volume-infused mousse into damp hair, getting your fingers into the roots and shaking your hair as you blow-dry.
Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam is great for adding bulk without weighing down the hair.
  • STEP 2: Once hair is about 90% dry, add lots of texturising product, such as L'Oreal Professional Paris techni.art Texture Spray Next, tease the hair out from the roots and gently back comb. Take care not to break the hair.
  • STEP 3: Use kirby grips and bobby pins to pin up sections of hair to the scalp. Don't be too precious about it though - keep it nice and messy!
  • STEP 4: To make sure the hair stays in place, spray in a little Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray all over.
