The Inspiration Behind Lucy Boynton's Best Beauty Looks Makes Them Even More Special

18/01/2020 - 05:50 PM

Lucy Boynton [1] is relatively new on the Hollywood scene. But not only is the British-American actor getting attention for her roles in films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Murder on the Orient Express, but she's also quickly making a name for herself as the most daring celebrity on the red carpet when it comes to her beauty looks.

Boynton's willingness to experiment with her makeup was apparent even in her early red carpet appearances, when she played with draping, negative-space eyeliner [2], and over-the-top lashes (which have become somewhat of a signature for her [3]). But in the past year, she and makeup artist Jo Baker [4] have really taken things up a notch, breaking out exciting and unexpected makeup looks that we're used to seeing on a runway in Paris, not a red carpet in Los Angeles.

For us beauty editors, Boynton's makeup is the focal point of every outfit. Every time her makeup artist shares a photo of the beauty magic they've created together on Instagram, we freak out — and then wait with bated breath until Baker shares behind-the-scenes photos and the details of their inspiration for the look, something she often does. Case in point: the orange-red eyeliner Boynton wore at the Venice Film Festival was inspired by actual lobsters — and no lie, it's one of her most stylish looks yet. Luckily for us, not only does Baker share her inspiration, but she also shares how-to videos and tips so you can re-create her looks in real life.

As for her hair, Boynton keeps things on the simpler side. Her hairstylists — who include Jenny Cho, Kylee Heath, and Halley Brisker — tend to stick to laid-back styles like beach waves, Old Hollywood-style side-swept bends, or some version of a half-up ponytail with volume at the crown. Regardless, her golden-blonde hair always looks beautifully understated, letting the makeup be the main focus of her beauty look.

So if you are stuck in a makeup rut or just want to admire these makeup masterpieces, read on to see Boynton's most exciting beauty looks from every angle — and learn the interesting inspiration behind each.

Lucy Boynton's Crystal Embellished Winged Makeup, 2020

Boynton and Baker started off 2020 with a bang. Her look for the Golden Globe Awards [5] featured this standout winged eye makeup that, quite frankly, deserved an award all of its own. According to Baker, this look was done using the Chanel Spring/Summer 2020 makeup collection with the addition of being totally embellished with flat-back crystals.

Lucy Boynton's Silver Scoop Eyeliner and Slicked Back Hair, 2019

Boynton's liner for The Politician press day looked out of this world (literally). Baker's inspiration for this look was the character Judy Jetson, so she came up with this glorious scooped silver eyeliner and soft, rosy-tinted lips.

Lucy Boynton's Parma Violet Purple Makeup, 2019

It takes two seconds to realise what this look was inspired by: Parma Violets, of course. Baker created the monochromatic lavender look as a tribute to the famous '80s sweet and also her love of Roald Dahl, making for a superplayful vibe.

Lucy Boynton's Supreme Extremes Makeup, 2019

Who knew neon yellow and red could be such a stylish combination for makeup? Baker sure made us want to try it right away. The bold makeup featured both matte and jelly textures using Chanel products, created for a Harper's Bazaar España shoot in September.

Lucy Boynton's Lobster-Tail Eyeliner, 2019

Baker showed us that anything can serve as makeup inspiration, even a lobster. Yep, that's right, she found beauty inspo in a crustacean. Whilst in Italy for the Venice Film Festival, Boynton wore bright-red eyeliner that ran along her brow bones and draped down towards her temples, as well as tiny lower wings along the outer corner of her bottom lashes. The look was topped off with a diffused lip done in the same fiery hue as the liner.

Lucy Boynton's Tie-Dye Eye Makeup, 2019

Of course, Baker turned the best part of Summer into an enviable beauty look. Rainbow gelato served as the inspiration behind this pastel, multicoloured tie-dye eye makeup. To complement the swirl of colours around her eyes, nothing else was needed save for a touch of blush and some lip balm. This tie-dye eye makeup, surprisingly, has quickly turned into one of our favourite celebrity makeup trends [6] of the moment — and Boynton and Baker have a lot to do with that.

Lucy Boynton's Venetian Glitter Tears, 2019

Baker took a simple daytime eye makeup look into one ready for a night on the town, giving a not-so-subtle nod to masquerade balls and Venetian face masks for an event Boynton attended in the historic Italian city. She used pewter-toned glitter and silver crystals to create the half-diamond shape underneath the lower lashes.

Lucy Boynton's Double Winged Liner, 2019

Baker named this look "Galactic Kitty Wings," [7] and it's got to be one of our favourite looks for that reason alone. The look included a fierce, double-winged liner surrounding a shimmery silver lid, a shape that was inspired by a swallow's tail feathers and the Nike Swoosh logo. This look was topped off (in true Boynton style) with plenty of mascara and laid-back waves.

Lucy Boynton's Major Lashes and Soft Waves, 2019

For a photo shoot back in May, Boynton wore layers upon layers of lashes — literally. Baker layered three different types of false lashes here, describing the look as "punk'd Alice in Wonderland vibes." Consider us a fan.

Lucy Boynton's Chandelier-Inspired Eye Makeup, 2019

There wasn't an inch of Boynton that wasn't covered in crystals at the 2019 Met Gala, and that included her eye makeup. Inspired by dramatic crystal chandeliers, Baker added five lines of flat-back crystals on the upper lid and three on the lower lid to create a starburst effect. She even added extra sparkle on the end of each lash. This makeup plus the aqua hair made for a dreamy, ethereal look.

Lucy Boynton's 3D Holographic Liner, 2019

Another day, another graphic eyeliner look for Boynton, but this time it wasn't really eyeliner at all. Rather, Baker used holographic craft paper secured with lash glue. To complete the look, Baker applied a sheer, berry-hued lip gloss and hairstylist Jenny Cho slicked back Boynton's hair into a wet-looking style for a look that was part "gift wrap" and part punk rock.

Lucy Boynton's Gunmetal Smoky Eyes, 2019

Search "glam rock" in the dictionary, and Boynton's look for an Oscars afterparty will come up first. For Hollywood's biggest night of the year, she wore glittery grey eye shadow (top and bottom!) and her hair styled in Old Hollywood-esque waves for the perfect combination of grunge and glamour.

Lucy Boynton's Baby-Blue Eye Shadow and Beret, 2019

For a completely different vibe at a pre-Oscars dinner party, Boynton wore a combination of 1950s-style baby-blue shadow and glossy magenta lipstick. If you want to try this one at home, Baker said the key to keeping this look modern is "the simplicity and keeping the two bold colours uncomplicated."

Lucy Boynton's Caution Cat Eyes, 2019

Warning: we can't take our eyes off this bold, graphic, yellow-and-black eye makeup. Baker named this look "Caution Cat Eyes ⚠️⚠️⚠️" with a nod to Kill Bill. The striking combination of the eye makeup and voluminous updo was one of our favourite celebrity beauty looks of the year. Baker's top tip for this look is that "when eyes take centre stage, it's important to keep skin and lips minimal and gorgeous looking!"

Lucy Boynton's Snapper Flared-Out Makeup and Hair, 2019

For the 2019 BAFTAs, Baker used shades of antique gold and deep mauve [8] to create this "snapper tail flare shaped shadow" with "hints of '80s drama." Hairstylist Halley Brisker followed suit by adding a middle part and clipping the front half of the hair tightly back, which resulted in the ends being fluffed out to the sides, creating a ruffled effect that matched the texture of her dress.

Lucy Boynton's Negative-Space Winged Liner, 2019

This was perhaps the start of our love affair with negative-space liner on Boynton. The kitten-ear-inspired winged eyes by Baker were "giving major FELINES" [9] for her look at the Charles Finch & Chanel pre-BAFTAs dinner. She wore her hair in a similar style to the actual BAFTAs, half up and in mussed-up, beachy waves.

Lucy Boynton's Easy-Breezy Peach Makeup, 2019

For the Rodarte show in Los Angeles, Baker took inspiration from the '80s yet again to come up with this makeup look that had all the "Shimmery Easy Breezy Peach feels." [10] Cho kept Boynton's hair feeling just as fresh by adding volume and a bit of bend to her neat, blunt bob [11].

Lucy Boynton's Draped Pink Shadow, 2019

For the 2019 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Baker and Boynton were inspired by their youth in the UK [12]. The pink eye shadow bleeding onto the cheek (also known as "draping" in the beauty world) was reminiscent of the pink custard pudding often served at school lunch, while the vibrant red lip colour came from a classic telephone box.

Lucy Boynton's Floating Eyeliner, 2019

The sheer polka-dot material of Boynton's Erdem dress was the jumping-off point for this "precision punk liner," [13] as Baker called it. But her real inspiration was apparently power lines, wrought-iron gates, and window bars [14]. To create the look, Baker used Victoria's Secret Beauty Major Lash Mascara and Chanel Beauty Calligraphie de Chanel Cream Eyeliner [15].

Lucy Boynton's Braided Updo, 2019

For the Critics' Choice Awards in LA, Boynton uncharacteristically chose to play up her hair instead of her makeup. Cho braided two small plaits on either side of her hair, secured them at the back, and accessorised with sparkly, star-shaped hair clips.

Lucy Boynton's Firework Spark Makeup, 2019

Cho styled Boynton's hair in a messy-chic updo with a "subtle nod to Edie Sedgwick" [16] for the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society Awards. Her makeup, on the other hand, paid homage to David Bowie with glitter and silver firework-like sparks [17], which created a "Ziggy Stardust mood," [18] according to Baker.

Lucy Boynton's Sculpted Matte Shadow, 2019

This may appear to be a fairly straightforward makeup look in fairly straightforward neutral tones, but this is Baker and Boynton we're talking about here. Baker was inspired by the balanced dimensions of the arches in Gothic cathedrals and old churches to create Boynton's eye makeup look [19] at the 2019 Golden Globes. The colour palette [20] of cream, caramel, and golden tones came from mint humbug sweets and a '70s luxe glamour vibe.

Lucy Boynton's Dolly Lashes, 2019

Boynton's "doll" makeup look for the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January was inspired by '80s pink sweets [21], pink wafers, and blancmange. Hairstylist Bridget Brager flipped out the ends of Boynton's hair and curtain fringe (along with a sneaky hidden braid [22]) to give the overall vibe of the entire beauty look more sweetness.

Lucy Boynton's Long, Straight Hair, 2018

For the Bohemian Rhapsody world premiere in London in October 2018, we saw Boynton as we don't often see her: with long, straight hair. Brisker extended the actor's bob below her shoulders [23] using extensions, a task that took under three hours, while makeup artist Alexis Day [24] went with smoky grey shadow, thick lashes, lightly blushed cheeks, and semimatte pink lips.

Lucy Boynton's Braided Side Parting, 2018

Brisker styled Boynton's hair with a side parting and braid to balance out her uncomplicated, peach-toned makeup [25] (by Alexis Day) for the Valentino Haute Couture Show in Paris in July 2018.

Lucy Boynton's Blue Eyeliner and Voluminous Hair, 2017

Boynton's dramatic eye makeup [26] for the Murder on the Orient Express world premiere in 2017 featured blue glitter eyeliner, which was Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner [27] (£17), to be exact.

Lucy Boynton's Classic Red Lip, 2016

Back in 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival, Boynton kept things simple with a diffused matte red lip (meaning the ends were soft and a little blurry) and loose pieces of hair framing her face.

Lucy Boynton's Pinup-Girl Vibes, 2016

At the Deauville US Film Festival in France in September 2016, Boynton looked like an actress from the 1950s with her shoulder-length blonde hair styled in soft, side-swept waves and a red lip that was so bold and precise, it practically looked stamped on.

Lucy Boynton's Messy Crown Braid, 2016

One of the only true updos we've ever seen her do, Boynton wore her blonde hair in a wispy, purposely mussed-up crown braid for the In Dubious Battle premiere during the Deauville US Film Festival.
