This Is What an Average Workweek Looks Like For Meghan Markle's Makeup Artist

07/10/2018 - 11:00 AM

As the old adage goes: only when you walk a mile in someone's shoes will you truly understand what comes after you touch the face of her royal Duchess of Sussex [1] on her day of holy matrimony [2]. (Or something like that.)

The masses like to call this the Meghan Markle Effect [3] — and not even her glam squad is immune. In fact, ever since news got out that Markle's makeup artist [4] and longtime friend Daniel Martin [5] was behind her wedding look back in May, his schedule has been booked solid.

"If I'm going to continue taking care of other people, I've learned that I also deserve to take care of myself as well."

"Because of the global exposure it's given me, I've gotten to do more collaborations and partnerships outside of just beauty," he told POPSUGAR. It also means a sh*t ton more partnerships, interviews, parties, celebrity gigs, and, yeah, airline miles. It's fun, of course, but not a walk in the park: "This year was an awakening of sorts for me both professionally and personally and in the end, if I'm going to continue taking care of other people, I've learned that I also deserve to take care of myself as well."

Ahead, Martin peels back the curtain on what work looks like for him. Let's just say, this isn't your average 9-to-5. And his shoes? A little more regal.

Day 1

It's the end of New York Fashion Week, so I'm celebrating with my homies Serge Normant and Francisco Clark. [Editor's note: Normant was also among the royal wedding glam squad — he did Meghan Markle's hair [6]. Clark is the founder of Clark's Botanicals.] I had hosted a Backstage Pop Up with Dior at the Oculus World Trade Centre earlier, where I was giving tips and tricks, plus free makeup applications.

Day 2

I'm hosting a Dior Beauty event tonight, but even though that will keep me busy, I made a point to stop and vote. Please remember to vote this November!

Day 2

It was a successful event with my Dior ladies, and my bestie [ed: and supermodel] Veronica Webb and her daughters stopped by to support. I love my New York family.

Day 3

I'm out the door at 9 am for my friend Judy Greer. She's doing a press tour of her directorial debut of her movie A Happening of Monumental Proportions. I'm so proud of her! Before Judy's Today Show appearance, hairstylist Anthony Campbell [7] and I do a few final touches.

Day 3

My backstage setup for Judy for her Today Show appearance: Tatcha The Silk Canvas Primer [8] (£40), Honest Beauty Magic Beauty Balm Facial Moisturiser [9] (£10), Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation [10] (£39), Beautyblender Pure [11] (£17), Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder [12] (£29), Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer [13] (£24), Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Shadow [14] (£23).

Day 3

Before I hop on a call with my Dior Beauty team to discuss upcoming Emmy weekend and Paris fashion week obligations, I stop by the SNL studio for a quick tour. I wrap with Judy at 5 pm and head to the airport to fly to LA for the Emmys.

Day 4

My best friend of 25 years, Ray, has flown in for the weekend. He has never been to Los Angeles, so we did a little shopping on Rodeo Drive.

Day 4

Ray is also a big Wonder Woman fan, so we had to find Lynda's star on the Walk of Fame.

Day 4

It's the day before the Emmys, and we're celebrating Elisabeth Moss [15]'s LA Confidential cover shoot, with custom Handmaids Tale cocktails.

Day 4

A family picture of our Emmys crew!

Day 5

It's finally the day of the Emmys, which started with an afternoon getting ready. We're doing our last looks for Lizzie before she hits the red carpet.

Day 5

Now, I'm off to co-hosting an Emmys red carpet viewing party with Instagram at the Sunset Towers. So many great friends in one picture who came to support each other and celebrate.

It's been a busy week, but there's always time for a selfie. . .
