If you're well-acquainted with hair colour, you know it's fairly traditional of women to darken their dye jobs for cooler seasons. But if you've got balayage blond strands, your mane is in prime condition for a rainbow transformation, so don't return to your standard brunette shade just yet.
According to colourist and Brush in Hand owner Hannah Edelman, a balayage blond base creates "double-take-worthy variation" in tone under rainbow dye. To prove her point, she exclusively shared this incredible custom coif — oceanic brunette — with POPSUGAR.
"Oceanic brunette is a low-key way to incorporate deep blue and dusty pastel tones into your natural base colour," she said over email. "I love this colour palette for brunettes with olive or cool-toned skin."
The stormy base comes courtesy of Pravana Blue, which Edelman used to establish a "deep and ashy shadow" on her hair model Noamme. She then mixed up five other hues (medium blue, light blue, violet, medium violet, and bright lavender). Using these tones, she colour-melted in irregular sections from dark to medium to light, creating a dreamy yet moody masterpiece that evokes tempestuous seas. Read on to see it from all angles.
