Many celebrities prep their skin for the red carpet, enduring weeks of facial treatments. (We know, rough life.) For these actors and actresses, having gorgeous skin is a part of their lifestyle. Celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas, who just opened her Los Angeles flagship, is known for giving her signature glow to clients, like the always-effervescent Emma Roberts and Julianne Moore. In between tending to stars ahead of the Golden Globes, the skin expert took some time to broadcast on Facebook Live to reveal what she typically avoids when giving a pre-award-show facial.
"I do not do radio frequency the day of red carpet events because sometimes you can get red after and stay pink," Joanna said. "For special events, you're not going to be wearing a lot of makeup, especially not covering your skin. You want your skin to shine through. That's my goal, is to let people feel like they don't have to wear any makeup if they don't have to."
Radio frequency is one of the most buzzed-about (pun intended!) facial treatments out there. Similar to microcurrent, which utilises an electrical current to enhance the skin and tighten muscles, radio frequency utilises heat to help tone and tighten the skin. The difference is that it focuses more on stimulating collagen production. Because of the warmth, it's a relaxing treatment that works well in conjunction with microcurrent, and it also works best when it's done consecutively over a few weeks' time.
For a big event, though, the heat could leave you pink or even a little red, as Joanna stated. Instead, you can opt for microcurrent the day of your event to ensure your skin looks taut and sculpted in a noninvasive way.
