Selena Gomez Bob and Bangs in the "Back to You" Music Video

Exactly How to Get Selena Gomez's "Back to You" Hair, According to Her Hairstylist

You may have spent all day sifting through the Justin Bieber conspiracy theories supposedly hidden in Selena Gomez's "Back to You" music video. (Or maybe you dedicated the entire three minutes and 29 seconds to staring at Andrey Kupchenko. No judgement.) But believe it or not, there is something else entirely that makes the song even better — and that's the banging bob she's wearing while singing it. To get the full low-down on what inspired the vintage hairstyle, we asked celebrity stylist Danielle Priano, who worked with Gomez on the shoot, to spill her secrets . . . and you know we can't keep those to ourselves.

"This look was inspired by 1960s love scenes," Priano told POPSUGAR, adding that her client was very involved in the styling process. "Selena is super hands-on with all of her creative endeavours. She always has an idea of what she wants. She wanted the look to feel dated with a modern twist."

Luckily, though, to re-create the retro-fringe look, you don't need a time machine to pull it off — if done right. "This works best for those with an oval face," she said. "That's the goal to making your face look proportionate. Sometimes if you have a round face, you don't want to make it look more round with a fringe."

When it comes to hair texture, there are no specific rules. But for the easiest styling, Priano says people with straight to wavy hair and no cowlicks are ideal candidates for these types of bangs. (If your hair is really curly, Priano suggests skipping this style . . . unless you are going to straighten it, either chemically or with hot tools.) "Keep in mind that bangs are a look," she said. "If you don't want to always have them, don't get them." Full disclosure: I got a fringe right before June, and my best friend called me "literally the dumbest human" because she insisted hair would stick to my forehead sweat come July's oppressive heat. (She's so nice to me.) To combat this, Priano suggests spraying dry shampoo at the roots of your fringe. Just as the formula eliminates grease from day-three hair, it will also absorb your sweat.

Speaking of days-old hair, the good news about a look like this is that Priano says its upkeep is pretty easy. "It's not complicated at all to style," she said. "It takes about 20 minutes." First, work in a bit of mousse, like Pantene Pro-V Style Series Volume Body Boosting Mousse, from root to tip. Then, blow-dry your hair with a round brush, rolling the ends inward to frame your face. After that, you're free to go back to obsessing over the Selenator thirst trap that is "Back to You."
