14/06/2019 - 10:40 AM

Serena Williams [1] shared a sweet photo to Instagram of herself braiding her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian's hair, and used the opportunity to educate her followers on the significance of the tradition. In her caption, she detailed the history of braids [2] in Africa.

"Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia," she wrote. "We have been braiding her hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialise. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations and quickly made its way across the world. I am honoured to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions."

Ohanian can be seen smiling in the photograph, looking thrilled to be spending some quality time with her mom. The photo is an important reminder of the significance of these hairstyles [3] and the bond between mother and daughter. Ahead, check out some more cute moments between the pair.
