Sweatproof Hair Tips Straight From a Hairstylist, Because, Damn, It's Hot Out

It can seem nearly impossible to keep your Summer hairstyle intact while you're sweating through hot and humid days. For one thing, getting your hair wet with sweat or humidity usually ruins your style and can cause it to become frizzy and limp.
That's why we reached out to hairstylist Devin Toth of Salon SCK in NYC to find out how he keeps his clients' hair looking good even when they're bound to work up a sweat. He recommended products and techniques to fight the high temperatures and ensure your hair stays gorgeous, even when you feel sticky. Check out his tips, ahead.
Stay Away From Silicones
Toth explained that when it's super humid outside and his clients are likely to sweat, he avoids any product with humectants or silicones. "Products with silicone can easily break down with sweat and make your hair extra greasy so I use a drop of Rene Fris Styling Cream ($19) is because it's 100 percent silicone-free," he said.
Use Hair Oils
Toth recommends swapping your usual hydrating products for an oil when it's super hot and humid outside. "Oils can smooth your hair without breaking down from moisture caused by sweat or humidity." He recommends the Essence Absolute by Shu Uemura ($69). "It nourishes the hair, rebalances moisture and even comes in travel size which is perfect for the beach or for on-the-go throughout a humid day," he said.
Dry Shampoo is Your Best Friend
Once you start to sweat, a dry shampoo like the Living Proof Perfect hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo ($24) will become your best friend. For those with darker hair and skin, Toth recommends the Verb Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair ($16). "That way, the colour will blend with your hair and if you sweat a little bit, the colour will blend with your skin tone too," Toth said.
Wear Creaseless Elastics
If you know you're going to sweat and don't want to ruin your style, Toth recommends creaseless hair ties like the Kitsch 8 Pack Hair Coils ($10) and what he calls the "pineapple" method. "Gather your hair into a pony tail on top of your head, bring it all the way through the hair coil once, and then bring it through the coil again but just half way — resulting in a faux-bun or pineapple shape," Toth said. "Bringing it up high on top of your head will keep your face framing tresses natural and full of body."
Secure Your Style
If you want a super sleek ponytail, a strong-hold gel like the Oribe Rock Hard Gel ($42) is the way to go. "Brush it along the hairline to keep your baby hairs 'snatched' and controlled throughout the day," Toth said.
