Ouch — Here's What to Do When You've Received a Really Bad Bikini Wax

07/06/2019 - 08:25 AM

Let's be real – bikini waxes [1] hurt. It's not the easiest of hair removal methods [2], either, so going to a good waxer is a necessity. Unfortunately, not everyone is as qualified of a waxer as we would like.

If you've wound up with a wax that is, well, just bad, don't panic. We consulted Helene Marie, waxing expert at European Wax Centre [3], on how to know that your wax wasn't a normal experience, what to do about it, and how to heal after the fact.

Check out her tips ahead.

What to Do if You’ve Had a Bad Waxing Experience

Chances are if you've had a bad wax – you're probably already in the Uber home googling it. It's normal for you to be a little sore, but it shouldn't last long. "If there are any signs of irritation that do not subside with 12-24 hours post-wax or if there is lifted skin, those are signs of an improper [waxing] technique," Marie said.

What Should You Do if You've Had a Bad Waxing Experience?

The first thing you should do is call the salon or centre you visited and let them know what happened. They may have aftercare suggestions to ensure everything heals quickly. "Avoid rubbing the area or using products containing alcohol or fragrances," Marie said. "Do not go in the pool or beach until skin has healed."

What to Do About Peeling or Bruised Skin From Waxes

Although it's rare, your skin could be peeling or even bruised. For peeling skin, Marie advises you stay away from harsh exfoliators and moisturise the area. She also stressed the importance of not picking at the area. As for bruises, they will fade within a few days.

How to Ensure Your Wax Experience Remains Sanitary

Your waxer should know not to double dip the wooden stick back into the pot after working on an area. Each time the waxer applies the wax to an area, they should throw it in the bin and pick up a new stick. Also, no matter how hot the wax is, they should not be blowing on it it to cool it off (editor's note: this is a real thing that happened to me). "Fanning the wax applicator lightly by hand is acceptable," Marie said.

When to See a Doctor After a Bad Wax

If you're still irritated after 48 hours, go and see a doctor. "Any signs of infection on torn or open skin (such as inflammation or excessive heat [are also cause to visit a medical professional]," Marie said.
