At age 12, Ashley Soto was diagnosed with vitiligo, an incurable condition in which patches of the skin lose their colour pigment. During her adolescence, she was bullied because of her skin's discoloration, and it took a toll on her self-confidence.
"It made me want to start hiding away from people and left me covering my skin, as I didn't want people to make fun of me," she told the Daily Mail.
Now at 21 years old, Ashley is no longer hiding. Rather, she's using social media to spread a message of self-acceptance by sharing photos that proudly show off her vitiligo. Recently, her pictures have taken a more artistic spin, as she has started turning her skin condition into beautiful works of art using markers and paint. She often traces around the patches, but some designs are more elaborate and involved, with one resembling a world map and another inspired by Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night" painting.
We're loving how Ashley has found true beauty in her vitiligo and is encouraging others to be equally as comfortable in their own skin. Look ahead to see some of her most stunning masterpieces so far — and be sure to read the inspiring captions!
