Shahidi's hairstylist Nikki Nelms [3] is the mastermind behind the gilded braid. Nelms, aka the Hair MacGyver, is known for her creative use of craft store materials in her celebrity clients' hair (like these googly eyes [4] on Janelle Monáe [5]). She placed the pins on Shahidi's hairline all the way down to the end of her braid.
