These Are the Coolest Autumn Haircut Trends, According to Top London Hairstylists

19/09/2019 - 04:20 PM

Now, there are no rules on what classifies a haircut as "autumnal", but there are seasonally popular trends that might inspire your next style. That's why we asked some of the top hairstylists in the UK to share what haircut trends they're loving for Autumn 2019 and exactly how to replicate the looks for yourself.

Unlike hair colour trends [1], you can't get a haircut that replicates the shades or vibe of the Autumn season. But what you can do is make your cut easier to manage in the chiller weather (see ya, hat hair). For example, Paul Windle, founder of Windle London [2] salon, is excited about embracing natural hair texture, giving any cut a modern and manageable refresh that is super easy to maintain in the cooler, dryer months.

However, if embracing your natural hair isn't what you fancy for Autumn, there are plenty of ways to be daring with a new style. Sophia Hilton, founder of Not Another Salon [3] in London, encourages going distinctive with your cut and experimenting with the modern mullet. While Adir Abergel [4], creative director at Virtue, is loving an equally bold and edgy "boy cut" look. (Abergel is based in California but gave client Charlize Theron [5] a bowl cut whilst she was filming in London, and the look has definitely taken off here.) Sound intimidating? After seeing the inspiration, you might not think so after all.

If you're looking to switch up your cut for the new season ahead, keep reading to see exactly what haircuts the pros are loving for Autumn and how you can make the cut work for you — no matter your preference or hair type.

Bubble Perm

You can't deny your intrigue for a cut called the bubble perm. The best part is, this curly-girl cut is all about embracing what Mother Nature gave you. "I believe we are going to start to see more and more people learn how to truly embrace their natural hair shape and texture," Windle said. The bubble perm is all about taking some of the weight out of a heavy bob, making it easier to manage and embracing your natural spirals. He predicts we're going to start seeing a move away from the "manicured beach wave" and towards celebrating individual curl and frizz. He recommends asking your stylist for a round, layered bob, working with your natural curl pattern to give you the desired shape and texture that also work best with your face shape.

Bold Pixie

Colder months can be harsh on Afro hair, as the spirals make hair more porous and therefore more open to environmental changes like drier air and chillier temperatures. So choosing a style that is low maintenance and offers your hair a fresh, healthy start for the changing season is a great option. London-based hairstylist and salon owner Charlotte Mensah [6] loves the bold pixie for exactly these reasons. "Short and structured is the latest twist on the pixie cut, and it works on any face shape," Mensah said. She instructs to ask your stylist for a pixie cut but to ensure they leave plenty of volume on top to give the desired finish.

Modern Mullet

For those looking to make a more daring move this Autumn, "it's all a bit modern mullet mad here at Not Another Salon," Hilton said. Although "a mullet can still be seen as intense, there are still a lot of shapes that can be totally wearable without seeming really out there. Ask your hairdresser for roundness on top [of the hair], which can look softer and more flattering for those that want to ensure the cut still looks feminine," Hilton explained.

Also referred to as a "razor cut" — because you have to use a razor to achieve it — this style is best for those with naturally thick hair as the razor removes excess weight from the hair, giving a softer finish. "This is also great for the Autumn and Winter months when our hair can start to go a bit more dry and brittle due to the cold weather," said Suzie McGill [7], UK Schwarzkopf ambassador. "Styles like the razor cut mean you don't need to overstyle your hair with heated tools, and if you do want to give your look more of an edge, you can simply spritz in some texturising spray."

'90s Boy Cut

For the brave out there, the '90s boy cut might be for you. "I'm seeing a revival in '90s boy cuts, which are blunt and unlayered," Abergel said. If the idea of it scares you, then one look at how badass Charlize Theron looks with this cut [8], and you might reconsider. However, there's no denying that this look is major and probably not a style to get on a whim. We definitely advise getting a consultation with your hairstylist beforehand.

If you're looking to try a version of this style for yourself, Abergel has pretty precise tips: Ask your hairstylist for a bob that's brought right up to the temples or the cheekbones. "The back [should be] cut close to the head so that it is nearly an undercut, but you still have length with a feminine edge, thanks to longer pieces which fall around the neck," Abergel said, adding, "I advise making it choppy. Your hairstylist is likely to chop into your hair in a vertical way to take weight off the ends, so that it collapses a little bit more. Leave the edges around the back longer, wispier, and softer, and make sideburns a feature by cutting them in so they frame the jawline and are easily tucked behind your ear."

Blunt Bob

Possibly the most slick and modern cut of the bunch is the blunt bob. "This sleek hairstyle is great for women with oval, square, or heart-shaped faces. It's really great on fine hair as it adds volume," said Jason Collier [9], hairstylist and Sheamoisture ambassador. His top tip for keeping this cut looking super sleek and straight is to finish with something like the SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave-In Treatment [10] (£11) to protect the hair from any unwanted frizz.

Curly Shag

For those with Afro hair, Mensah loves the curly shag. "Ask for blunt layers — both internal and external — to make hair look less bulky and to create shape," she said. It suits those with a rectangular face shape the most as it enhances the cheekbones. "It's fun and energetic in both movement of the curls and the look of the cut," Mensah explained.

Grown-Out Lob

If low-maintenance is a top priority for you this season, a relaxed, grown-out lob could be the perfect style for you. "It's a hybrid of midlength and an overgrown, longer-length bob. The hair falls around the top of the shoulder blades and is soft and tapered towards the ends, ensuring no harsh lines. The ends of the hair are shaped and feathered to provide that 'grown-out' look whilst maintaining hair health," explained Krysia Eddery [11], salon owner and Aveda UK colour ambassador.

If you want to try this style for yourself, "explain to your stylist that you would like some longer, soft layers to break up the ends and ensure there is no blunt, straight line," Eddery said. "Ask for some slightly shorter layering around your face to give depth around the front."
