The Best Celebrity Hair and Makeup Looks at the 2020 BAFTA Awards

02/02/2020 - 09:30 PM

In the UK, the EE British Academy Film Awards [1] — better known as the BAFTAs — are hands down the biggest red carpet event of the year. It's a night that brings together both well-established and up-and-coming British actors with the biggest Hollywood stars from around the world. And while, yes, that means you've got a room full of very talented humans and heartwarming, inspiring speeches (and maybe a cheeky joke or two), it also means you've got a room full of some amazing celebrity hair and makeup moments.

In that room was Florence Pugh, who is not only incredibly talented (she's nominated for best supporting actress [2] for her role in Little Women) but has been experimenting with intricate and unexpected hairstyles this entire awards season. And for the 2020 BAFTAs, she didn't disappoint, with one of the most intricate updos we've seen on her yet. Another beauty daredevil, Saoirse Ronan, stepped onto the red carpet with a cheerful red lip and unexpected hair flip, while Zazie Beetz, who also always wows us with her hair and makeup, gave us a gorgeous-yet-subtle nod to the movie in which she starred in, The Joker.

Keep reading to see these looks and all of the rest of the amazing beauty moments of the 2020 BAFTAs.

Zoë Kravitz's Coral Lipstick at the 2020 BAFTA Awards

Coral lipstick is a tricky shade to pull off, but Kravitz did it beautifully — with the help of makeup artist Nina Park — pairing the vibrant orangey-pink shade with matching earrings and a dress that looked like literal liquid gold [3]. As for her hair, Nikki Nelms slicked-down Kravitz's newly short hair, adding finger waves along the right side to give a subtle nod to Old Hollywood glamour.

Saoirse Ronan's Cheerful Red Lip and Greaser Coif at the 2020 BAFTAs

Ronan's beauty look brings us so much joy, from the cheery, bright-red lipstick — that complements her rainbow-coloured earrings — to her asymmetric updo. "The shape mirrors the silhouette of a classic greaser coif, and I added a feminine touch by creating a soft, floral-like faux bang to site gently across her forehead," says hairstylist Adir Abergel, who used Virtue Volumising Primer [4] (£34) to prep the hair and make it easier to twist and shape.

To get that ultra-vibrant red shade, Ronan's makeup artist, Karen Alder [5], combined By Terry Lip-Expert Matte Liquid Lipstick [6] in Red Shot and Sweet Flamenco (£29 each.

Zazie Beetz's Vampy Claret Lips at the 2020 BAFTAs

"After putting the makeup brushes down, we realised that we'd subconsciously channeled the Joker's colours; green and purple," Beetz's makeup artist Alex Babsky wrote in his Instagram post of the khaki eye shadow and plum-coloured lipstick he used. Framing the style were Beetz's gorgeous braids, styled and swept to one side by hairstylist Lacy Redway.

Ella Balinska's Winged Liner and Magenta Shadow at the 2020 BAFTAs

Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo tied Balinska's makeup into her gorgeous Giambattista Valli gown [7], using a vibrant pink shadow all over her lids and then framing the eyes with supersharp feline flicks. To best show off her ruffled collar and colourful eye makeup, hairstylist Rio Sreedharan pulled her hair into a glossy high ponytail.

Florence Pugh's Fuchsia Lips and Intricate Updo at the 2020 BAFTAs

All awards season long, hairstylist Peter Lux has created mind-blowingly intricate updos for Pugh, and the BAFTAs were no different. Taking a cute from the black bows on her dress, he intertwined a thick black grosgrain ribbon through the back of her hair, which was twisted, folded, and looped up into one of the most complicated hairstyles we've ever seen. As for that gorgeous nearly fluorescent lip? Makeup artist Naoko Scintu used Chantecaille Lip Liner in Darling followed by the brand's Lipstick in Tulipe "for an orange red satin finish," Scintu wrote in an Instagram post [8].

Jodie Turner-Smith's Curly Blunt Bob at the 2020 BAFTAs

Jodie Turner-Smith looked like a literal ray of sunshine in her custom yellow Gucci gown [9]. Topping it all off was her adorable and stylish curly bob — complete with brow-grazing fringe — and a hint of purple shadow on her lids.

Emilia Clarke's Subtle Smoky Eyes at the 2020 BAFTA Awards

Dressed in a twinkly black Schiaparelli gown, the new face of Clinique [10] brought some colour into her look with the faintest hint of plum in her charcoal shadow — courtesy of makeup artist Lynsey Alexander — and delicate sapphire gown. Hairstylist Sam McKnight kept things simple and sophisticated with a low, sleek knot.

Scarlett Johansson's All-Over Rose Gold Makeup at the 2020 BAFTAs

If you could peel your eyes away from Johansson's gorgeous (and gravity-defying) Atelier Versace gown, you'd notice that her eye makeup was the same glimmering rose-gold shade, topped off with long, feathery lashes and champagne-coloured highlights placed at the inner corners. Makeup artist Frankie Boyd also matched Johansson's lip colour to the dress, while hairstylist Danilo swept her hair into a graphic chignon.

Naomi Ackie's Waist-Length Twist at the 2020 BAFTAs

We love how Ackie incorporated her long, twisted ponytail into her outfit, draping it over the exposed shoulder in her one-shoulder gown.

Rooney Mara's Gift-Wrapped Chignon at the 2020 BAFTAs

Mara's hair was brushed up into an oversize ballerina bun, which was then decorated with a glossy navy ribbon that complemented her Givenchy gown beautifully.

Vick Hope at the 2020 BAFTAs

Hope, who hosted the BAFTAs red carpet Facebook live, chose to go matchy-matchy not just with her crimson dress but the carpet itself. Not so obvious were the teeny-tiny crystals glued around the inner and outer corners of her eyes.
