Beauty Products Boosting Our Moods During Lockdown

How Our Editors Used Beauty (and Beauty Products) to Find a Bit of Joy During Lockdown

At a time when medical professionals can't get enough PPE, children can't go to school, and thousands of people are furloughed or have lost their jobs, beauty products are not high up on the list of things we need to be focusing on or worrying about. That being said, in this strange and scary time — where nothing feels normal and everything seems out of whack — beauty products can bring some solace or offer a brief form of escapism.

People have long turned to beauty and personal-care products to feel better or bring a sense of normalcy during times of crisis, a phenomenon referred to as the "lipstick effect." Cosmetic sales boomed after the 2008 financial crisis when people, still wanting to feel and look good despite economic hardship, invested in makeup, which was considered a more affordable luxury than clothes, travel, and jewellery. Similarly, during World War II, when cosmetics were in extremely short supply (they were basically nonexistent) and beauty companies used all their resources to make personal-care products for the troops, British women still wanted to look and feel glamorous. They would ration their makeup to ensure they had enough for special occasions, and when that ran out, they'd get creative, using household items like beetroot as a lip stain or boot polish as mascara (the latter of which turned out to be very, very dangerous).

People have long turned to beauty and personal-care products to feel better or bring a sense of normalcy during times of crisis, a phenomenon referred to as the "lipstick effect."

The POPSUGAR editors and I definitely experienced the lipstick effect while being on lockdown here in the UK, turning to the products in our medicine cabinets and makeup bags to boost our moods and and try to feel "normal" for half a minute. Even as we continue to work from home for the next several weeks (or months, but who knows at this point), we still spritz our favourite perfume in the morning or brush up our brows before sitting down to our desk/kitchen tables, and we're all indulging ourselves a little, with foot masks (yes, they exist!), face massages, or a microneedling sessions before bed.

As editors, we know how lucky we are to have some of these beauty products at our disposal, but to experience the lipstick effect, you don't even need products. You could run yourself a hot bath, ask your partner or flatmate (if that wouldn't be awkward, that is) for a neck massage, or whip up a DIY hair mask in your kitchen.

You could also experience the lipstick effect by just cleaning out your makeup bag. A lot of the beauty items we're highlighting here are things us editors have owned for a while, makeup and skin-care items we're now either using more than ever or breaking out for the first time in months. This list isn't meant to get you to open your wallet but rather to get you inspired on how you can experience a bit of beauty escapism yourself. It can be as simple as putting on some lipstick and mascara before dinner — just hold the boot polish, please.

Color Wow Dream Filter Pre-Shampoo Mineral Filter

"I was already in need of a salon appointment before self-isolation; the ends of my hair were turning brassy, and the white strands that were once discreetly hidden with highlights began showing through. It's going to be a long time until I can get professional hair colour again (which I'm totally fine with; I want everyone to self-isolate until we are able to flatten the curve and ensure everyone is safe). However, when we eventually get back to the office, I'd like my hair colour to not look too orange or green.

Thankfully, I have almost a full bottle of Color Wow Dream Filter Pre-Shampoo Mineral Filter (£25) in my bathroom, which is a treatment spray that removes the stains left on pale hair due to mineral and metal buildup (which the London water is full of). Since I know you're going to ask, yes, it really works; you can see a visible difference after washing your hair. Before all of this, I used this spray maybe once every two months, but going forward, I'm definitely going to spray it on every three-to-four shampoos as it recommends on the bottle." — Sophia Panych, content director

Glossier Futuredew Oil-Serum Hybrid

"I love wearing and applying makeup, but I'm taking this time in self-isolation to give my skin a break from it all. Since it launched, I've been interested in trying the Glossier Futuredew Oil-Serum Hybrid (£23) but never got around to it because I was worried it wouldn't sit well underneath concealer and blush.

Since spending 99 percent of my time indoors, my skin has become really dull and dry, so I decided to break out Futuredew and give it a go. Now, I think I slather it on two or three times a day. Not only does it hydrate my parched skin, but because it has the faintest pink tint, it also counteracts any sallowness. It's like the skin-care equivalent of making my bed every morning or still hopping in the shower before work — it makes me feel put together and helps me stay positive." — SP

Christian Dior Holy Peony Fragrance

"I may not wash my hair every day, or even get fully dressed (been living in jumpers and leggings for the last few months), but every morning I spray on Christian Dior Holy Peony Fragrance (£220) and it makes me feel put together and ready to face the day. I love the beautiful floral scent for how fresh, sparkly, and juicy it is — thanks to notes of strawberry and raspberry mixed with all of the floral notes." — SP

Drunk Elephant Sweet Biome Fermented Sake Spray

"Its name may give a nod to the popular Japanese drink, but the Drunk Elephant Sweet Biome Fermented Sake Spray (£35) is more like a swig of Powerade for your skin. Chock-full with electrolytes (like coconut water and sodium PCA), plus amino acids and ceramides, one spritz makes me look (and more importantly feel) refreshed — which I indulge in regularly throughout the day." — SP

Bobbi Brown Crushed Shine Jelly Stick in Cranberry

"I'm obsessed with the new Bobbi Brown Crushed Shine Jelly Stick in Cranberry (£25), not only because the dome-shaped bullet looks adorable, but also for how quickly and easily it makes me look put together. It's so foolproof, you don't need a mirror to apply it.

The formula is almost like a tinted balm, although with a bit more pigment and not as moisturising. That's not to say it isn't hydrating — it certainly is, it's just not as thick and slippery as a balm, which ultimately means the colours wear longer. I keep the tube at my at-home desks for Zoom meetings. I'm not going to lie, the sheer, blue-based red hue has come in handy when unexpected video chats get popped on my diary." — SP

Georgia Louise Lift + Sculpt Butterfly Stone

"I've been treating myself to facial massages with my beloved Georgia Louise Lift + Sculpt Butterfly Stone (£70) a couple of times a week to both perk up my cheekbones and try and release some of the serious tension that's settled along my jawline since all this craziness began.

There are a lot of gua sha stones out there, but this one created by celebrity aesthetician Georgia Louise is something special. Sure, the delicate butterfly shape of the rose quartz is pretty to look at, but for me, it's what makes this so good at sculpting and massaging the muscles in my face. The curves and angles of the stone are smaller than your average gua sha stone, so you can really feel it lift up your cheekbones, soften tight muscles, and minimise any puffiness you have around your eyes and cheeks. A ten minute mini at-home facial with this is simply pure bliss." — SP

Beauty Bio GloPro Microneedling Regeneration Tool

"I've been a beauty editor for over a decade, and I have to admit that I was always too scared to try microneedling — even the at-home devices that promise to be pretty much painless. It took being stuck indoors and my skin freaking out (no really, I started breaking out and my skin got super dry, which ultimately made my fine lines look not so fine anymore) to finally muster up the courage and break out the Beauty Bio GloPro Microneedling Regeneration Tool (£199) I've had stashed in my bathroom for ages. Three months later, I'm hooked. I now look forward to it as a little skin-care indulgence throughout the week.

While it's not 100% completely painless — I find it feels a bit prickly on certain parts of my face, especially the forehead — you get used to it after about 10 seconds. Even just using it once or twice a week, every week since April, has totally turned my skin around. It's not as dry, the spots have pretty much stopped, and my forehead and crow's feet look a whole lot smoother. I can definitely thank lockdown for turning me into a microneedling convert." — SP

Essie Expressie Quick Dry Nail Colour

"Whilst stuck indoors, one of the activities that kept me busy was giving myself at-home manicures. Not only did it take up a good amount of time with all the filing and shaping and buffing, but it was also quite meditative, and made me feel a little bit more pulled together with beauty salons and nail bars closed. But even though I found the patience to paint my nails during lockdown, I still couldn't be bothered to wait for the polish to dry, which is where the Essie Expressie Quick Dry Nail Colour (£8), shown here in the shade Second Hand First Love. You paint on two coats (made easier thanks to the unique angled brush) and in just a couple minutes, the polish is completely dry — no annoying smudges or imprints left on your glossy polish. I was so impressed, I'm definitely going to keep this handy for last-minute nail emergencies." — SP

Clean Space Warm Cotton Reed Diffuser

"Other than my daily walk, I'm basically in my flat all day, every day, along with my boyfriend. Keeping everything neat and tidy keeps me from going stir crazy (not to mention keeps my anxiety levels down — hello, Virgo!), and how the place smells is a big part of that. I opened up the Clean Space Warm Cotton Reed Diffuser (£46) a few weeks ago in the bedroom and it's transformed the room into a little city oasis. On a sunny day, I like to open up the window and the combination of the soft breeze and smell of fresh linen makes me feel like I'm back home at my parents in the suburbs — not situated over an off-license in London's Zone 2." — SP

Beauty Pie Japanfusion Pure Transforming Cleanser

"Like a lot of people, I see skin care as an integral part of my everyday routine, so it's something I'm continuing to do during this work-from-home period. I cannot get enough of the Beauty Pie Japanfusion range, especially the Beauty Pie Japanfusion Pure Transforming Cleanser (£25). It has a jelly-like texture that, when washed off, transforms into a milky soap, which easily washes away grime without stripping the skin or making it feel tight and uncomfortable." — Tori Crowther, associate editor

Manucurist Green Flash Gift Set

"Doing my nails in lockdown is my therapy. It gives me time to myself, doing something productive that isn't work (important), no screen time (also important), and flexing my creative muscle. I'm typically a traditional gel manicure girl (I'm qualified, don't worry), but during lockdown I've found myself wanting to do my nails more frequently, and doing multiple gel removals each month is not great for anyone's nails. That's why I'm thrilled that I found the Manucurist Green Flash Gift Set (£85). This smart, plant-based gel nail system uses 84 percent bio-sourced ingredients, is 9-free (if that's your sort of thing), and best of all it can be removed with acetone-free remover. Basically, it has all of the incredible benefits of a traditional gel manicure (chip-resistant and ultra-shine) without the absolute faff of removal. It's a lockdown treasure for me." — TC

Ciate Cheat Sheet Nail Stickers

"Like I said, being able to do my nails in lockdown has been a creative outlet for me. And while I love doing intricate nail art, sometimes I just want to be able to do cool nail art without it taking 2 hours. Enter: Ciate Cheat Sheet Nail Stickers (£16). These nifty sheets contain nail stickers in all kinds of fun designs. You apply by simply peeling off the tiny designs off the sheet and sticking onto painted nails and then sealing with a topcoat. It's that easy! If you want more advice on application, check out this step-by-step guide." — TC

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask

"My hair has definitely looked better than it does right now during lockdown. It's dry, scruffy, almost definitely in need of a haircut, and could probably do with an in-salon ultra-conditioning treatment. But we've got bigger things to worry about right now than running to the salon. That doesn't mean I won't try and fit the problem at home, though. I've recently been loving the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask (£20). It does exactly what it promises on the bottle. You apply on damp, shampooed hair, give it 60 seconds to work its magic and you'll be left with an instant, incredible shine. If I'm feeling really fancy, I'll straighten my hair after using this treatment and it almost gives me that post-salon feeling. Not quite, but almost, and I'll take that." — TC

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Florale Dry Oil Mist

"With all this extra time in the evenings, I'm making sure I moisturise my body more. I'll only be bothered to moisturise my body if I adore the product, so I've turned to Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Florale Dry Oil Mist (£29.50). The oil texture feels luxurious and absorbs into the skin quickly, and it smells absolutely divine. If I'm not feeling an oil, I love Liz Earle Skin Replenishing Body Balm. The scent transports me straight to a spa." — TC

The Body Shop British Rose Shower Gel

"The quickest way to perk up my mood or make me feel a little more together is taking a nice, hot shower and using a shower gel I love. One of my all-time favourite body washes is The Body Shop British Rose Shower Gel (£5.50) It smells fresh and floral (not like your nan's rose fragrancy), and the fragrance really lingers on your skin." — TC

Starskin Gold Foot Mask

"I took my at-home pedicure to the next level with the Starskin Gold Foot Mask (£11.50) at the weekend. It added a special and glamorous (and totally extra) touch to an otherwise tedious job. These days, it's the little things that are helping being indoors all the time feel fun." — TC

Maison Francis Kurkdjian L'Eau À La Rose

"Spritzing perfume once I'm dressed in the morning has put a pep in my very short two steps into the next room for work. My current favourite is Maison Francis Kurkdjian L'Eau À La Rose (£128); the scent is light and fresh and reminds me of sunny weather. It's not too strong, so it doesn't overpower the small workspace I'm sharing." — TC

Sanatio Natural Miracle Jojoba Radiance Essence

"There are some oils that your body just loves, and jojoba, for me, is one of them. I was really surprised that being confined to my room is actually making my skin dry out, where it's usually the opposite once spring begins.

To soothe and soften dry patches, I've been layering the Sanatio Natural Miracle Jojoba Radiance Essence (£24) over my DHC Olive Oil Essential Cream (which is amazing). In the Summer, I'll definitely be putting a pause on my heavier day cream and just using jojoba oil and SPF." — Kara Kia, editorial assistant

Inika Organics Baked Mineral Bronzer in Sunbeam

"If I were trapped on a desert island and only had to pick one beauty essential (or trapped between the four walls of my bedroom), it would be bronzer — controversial! I love a golden makeup look, and the Inika Organics Baked Mineral Bronzer in Sunbeam (£33) gives the perfect amount of natural warmth to my complexion. My outside time might be limited to the grocery store and exercise in the park, but that's not going to stop me from glowing like a disco ball." — KK

DHC Olive Virgin Oil Crystal Skin Essence

"I was really surprised that being confined to my room is drying out my skin — it's usually the opposite once Spring begins. After cleansing in the morning, I now layer the gentle DHC Olive Virgin Oil Crystal Skin Essence (£26) — that I brought home on our last day in the office — over my Summer Fridays CC Serum, and before my DHC Olive Oil Essential Cream, and it gives my complexion an extra boost of hydration. It's been a real skin saver since being in self isolation." — KK

Spotlight Oral Care Water Flosser

"Both the idea and the act of flossing are enough to make me positively squeamish. When I heard about the genius invention that was a water flosser, I knew I'd have to try it. This Spotlight Perfect Smile Bundle (£239) makes it a million times easier, and I find myself flossing most days now, which makes me feel like I totally have my life together (and my dentist very happy)." — Navi Ahluwalia, assistant editor

Magnitone First Step Compact Daily Cleansing Brush

As an acne sufferer, getting my skin superclean still remains my biggest struggle, but Magnitone First Step Compact Daily Cleansing Brush (£40) — which is incredibly soft, I might add — paired with my new favourite Ole Heriksen cleanser, really gets the job done. Plus, it's like getting a mini facial each night. — NA

Bea Skincare Photodynamic Facial Mask

"I've wanted to try an LED mask for the longest time, so 2021 ended up being the year that I bit the bullet and invested in one. I wear the Bea Skincare Photodynamic Facial Mask (£119) for around 10 minutes each night, and I've not seen a new spot so far!" — NA

Estrid Razor Kit

"I've been meaning to try this Estrid Starter Kit (£8) mostly because of how pretty the colours are, but now that it's arrived, I can wholeheartedly say that it works really well, too. It's heavy, which makes me feel like it'll last forever, and the shower handle is genius." — NA

Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist

"Nothing makes me sleepier than this Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist (£45). Ok that's a lie, mornings in general make me quite sleepy (until I've had a cup of coffee, that is). Throughout the pandemic, I've been having more trouble than usual getting to sleep, and this soothing spray does the trick; it makes me feel super calm and at ease, with the extra benefits of smelling great and protecting my skin from skin-ravaging free radicals." — NA

Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Facial Sheet Mask

"For some reason, using sheet masks and slathering my face in oil feels like the ultimate self-care practice for me, so I'm doubling down on both while in lockdown. The Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Facial Sheet Mask (£5.50) has been a go-to of mine for years, when my skin is dry and congested, which is exactly how my face feels right now." — Angela Law, contributing editor

Bybi CBD Booster

"I've been using this booster for the past three months, and I love it. While I'm not 100 percent across the science behind the Bybi CBD Booster (£12), I do know that my acne feels calmer and less red when I use it regularly. Plus, my skin is feeling super dry and tight in isolation, so it's soaking up this product, big time. I've been mixing in two drops with my regular moisturiser, morning and night, for extra skin juiciness." — AL

& Other Stories Sicilian Sunrise Hand Soap

"The hand wash situation in my house has been a bit sad during lockdown. I ran out of my delicious & Other Stories Sicilian Sunrise Hand Soap (£6) very early on, and since then, I've been using a bland soap in my bathroom and (please don't judge me) dishwashing liquid in my kitchen. No matter how many times I planned on buying new soap when out for a walk, I forgot to pick some up. So, a couple of days ago, I went online and repurchased my beautiful & Other Stories soap — one for the kitchen, one for the bathroom — and it's bringing me immeasurable amounts of joy. It smells exactly like the name, with a slightly floral, and a little bit woody smell, with a hint of lemon that reminds me of that freshly showered feeling you get after a day in the sun and ocean. Total bliss." — AL

Hourglass Arch Brow Shaping Gel

"Call me crazy, but brushing up my brows each morning just makes me feel a little bit better — like I have somewhere to be. After applying my skin care and SPF, I do a quick brush-through with the Hourglass Arch Brow Shaping Gel (£25), and that's the extent of my effort right now." — AL

OPI Soft Shades Nail Lacquer in Samoan Sand

"The OPI Soft Shades Nail Lacquer in Samoan Sand (£13.50) is, just quietly, the best natural-looking nail polish of all time. A couple of coats of this shade, followed up with a layer of OPI RapiDry Top Coat (£15), has made me feel a little bit put together while working from home." — AL

Mylee The Full Works Complete Gel Polish Kit

"Without being able to go to nail salons to get the perfect gel mani, at-home versions have had to take their place. The best one I've tried by far is this Mylee The Full Works Complete Gel Polish Kit (£130). It comes complete with eight colours, gel prep and remover duo, and cuticle oil, so it's everything you need in one kit, and it's definitely worth it." — NA
