The Best At-Home Hair Gloss and Glaze Treatments 2021

Missing the Salon? A Gloss or Shine Treatment May Be the Answer to Refreshing Your Hair Colour at Home

Many of us put our hair through a lot, which often results in damage and subsequently loss of shine. Hot styling tools, hair colouring, tight topknots, chemical styling — you name it, we've probably done it. Over time, this can lead to our hair looking dull, frayed, and less defined. To combat this and help to repair damage, deep conditioning treatments and masks are typically first port of call. But second to that, to get the shine and vibrancy of hair colour back are glaze, gloss, and shine treatments.

Many gloss and shine treatments were first offered in salons (and are still popular in-salon treatments), often as an add-on when getting your hair dyed, but now, there are also plenty of at-home versions of the treatment, too. For people who are unable to get to a salon (particularly during lockdown and quarantine periods), these at-home shine treatments can add a new lease of life to your hair (think: healthy, glossy, vibrant) in a matter of minutes.

So, what is a gloss, glaze, or shine treatment exactly? They pretty much all do the same thing — add noticeable shine to your hair — though they do have a few small differences. A gloss treatment is semipermanent treatment that adds vibrancy back into coloured hair, evens out tone or brassiness in your hair, as well as adding shine. "If you have highlighted hair, what you're trying to do is eliminate either yellow or orange tones. If your hair is generally looking washed out, you want to either enhance the colour or add a bit of warmth in there," said Jack Howard, balayage expert and educator at Paul Edmonds salon in London. "So, essentially, you either want to enhance your colour or neutralise tones through it." Most gloss treatments are done in the salon, but there are now a few at-home treatments now, which often last four to six weeks.

A glaze treatment is similar to a gloss but doesn't last as long; it tends to sit on the hair rather than penetrate your strands, which is why it's more of a quick fix.

And finally, a shine treatment is, you guessed it, all about the shine. Shine treatments have nothing to do with colour; they simply perform best at making your hair look its best self — whether that's springing curls back to life or giving you sleek, smooth strands.

If you're nervous to try out a gloss or glaze treatment, Howard suggested trying a few other less-committal steps first. "First stop, maybe try a coloured shampoo, or a clear gloss to add vibrancy and shine. If that's not working for you or you want to go a step further, then move onto a coloured gloss," he said.

Interested in trying a gloss, glaze, or shine treatment at-home but not sure where to start? We've rounded up some of our favourites ahead.

Josh Wood Gloss

Josh Wood Gloss (£19) is one of the newest gloss products on the scene, but it's quickly made a name for itself as a powerhouse in reducing colour fade, deep conditioning, and giving hair an incredible shine — all without stepping into a salon. The weekly treatment is for virgin or coloured hair and comes in an impressive nine shades ranging from the classic blonde and brunette to multiple shades of red. Application requires a little more care time with the Josh Wood Gloss, so set aside 20 minute for a postshampoo masking session, but it's well worth the wait because you'll be left with an intensified hair colour and an overall shine.

John Frieda Luminous Glaze Clear Shine Gloss

As it says on the bottle, the John Frieda Luminous Glaze Clear Shine Gloss (£13) is for all shades of hair. Since it's a colour-less gloss, it doesn't contain ammonia or peroxide, it won't deposit any dye or lighten your hair at all. Instead, it focuses on adding a shine so intense it dazzles.

This treatment is also a little different from many gloss formulas in that it can be used each time you wash your hair — many gloss treatments are used on a weekly or every-so-often basis.

Rita Hazan True Color Ultimate Shine Gloss

Rita Hazan True Color Ultimate Shine Gloss (£21) is one of the easiest treatments to use in my opinion. The foam formula makes it a doddle to coat every strand with zero mess, and even better, you can do it quickly in the shower without waiting around long for the formula to get to work. Simply shampoo your hair, apply the Ultimate Shine Gloss, and rinse immediately, or wait up to three minutes for a more vivid colour boost, and then condition as normal. The gloss comes in five shades: clear, blonde, brown, red, and breaking brass to help refresh colour and add intense shine.

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask

If you're after salon-worthy shine in a few minutes, Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask (£21) is your answer. It does exactly as it promises, "delivers brilliant moisture and shine in just 60 seconds." The key is the amino acids in the formula, which smooths your hair from roots to ends and boosts hair elasticity, meaning it's less prone to breakage.

Thanks to its lightweight formula, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask is great for most hair types. Amika recommends fine and oilier hair types using the treatment in place of conditioner, and thick, coarser hair types using it after a conditioner on mid lengths and ends. The quick application also means it's supereasy to incorporate into an existing hair routine. The shine treatment also smells amazing, which in a hair product, is always welcome.

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze (£24) is a glaze treatment that comes in two options: light and dark. The light formula aims to brighten and counteract brassy tones, and the dark formula reduces colour fade and dullness by depositing temporary dye onto your hair. In addition to adding colour vibrancy, the formula also hydrates and helps to prevent hair breakage. So it's a win-win.

As for the application process, it differs from other gloss treatments as it's used as a styling treatment on damp hair after shampooing and conditioning with no need to rinse.

The Hair Boss Clear Shine Gloss

The Hair Boss Clear Shine Gloss (£15) is another product that's all about the shine rather than enhancing the tone or shade (if you choose the clear gloss, that is). The treatment, which comes in four shades, is almost like a preconditioning step.

For best results, the brand recommends to shampoo as normal, squeeze out excess water from your hair, apply the Clear Shine Gloss all over your hair making sure it's well saturated, and leave it to work for 20 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse the gloss out and follow with the deep condition mask provided, leave the mask to get to work, and rinse well. The process definitely isn't the quickest, but if you're looking to treat your hair to a deep condition, it'll result in an incredible shine.

Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask

One for the hair colour devotees, the Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask (£39) is one of the best at-home gloss masks to enhance hair colour, especially blonde hues. The once-a-week mask aims to deeply hydrate your hair whilst neutralising brassiness. It comes in five shades to suit most hair colours and the enhanced colour lasts three to five weeks.
