Whew, These Met Gala Beauty Looks Were Worth the Wait

15/09/2021 - 01:30 PM

There may have been a four-month date change in this year's annual Met Gala [3], but there's one thing that always stays the same come fashion's biggest night: the over-the-top beauty looks [4] hitting the red carpet. The dress code this time around was "American Independence" — and it's fair to say no one was quite sure how each celebrity would interpret the theme. Luckily, celebrities delivered in the beauty department.

There were retro hairstyles [5] that gave a nod to the '60s and '70s. There were glitter nails decals and loads of shimmer eyeshadow. You'll even see a hair colour change or three (here's looking at you Gigi Hadid). From first timers Megan Thee Stallion and Met Gala chochairs Billie Eilish and Timothée Chalamet [6] to return attendees like Kristen Stewart [7] and Amandla Stenberg, the evening is proved to be filled with enough hair, makeup, and nail inspiration to fill an your mood board through the end of the year.

Julia Garner Pearl Eye Makeup

Why do a black winged liner when you can do a silver gem-encrusted winged liner instead? It seems that Julia Garner and makeup artist Dame Pat McGrath [8] thought just that. For the big event, McGrath placed five tiny individual gems from the outer corners of Garner's eyes that extended up towards them temples, as well as three smaller gems on the inner corners of her eyes. On Garner's actual lids, McGrath blended the shade Secret Eden from from her Mothership IX: Huetopian Dreams eyeshadow palette [9] (£120) through the creases and along the lower lash lines, and then pressed the Astral Venusian Orchid pigment from the same palette all over the lids.

Amandla Stenberg's Durag-Inspired Locs

On the red carpet, Stemberg explained that they asked hairstylist Vernon François [10] if he could create a durag out of hair. And that's exactly what he delivered.

"This is a first for me ~ creating a durag MADE WITH hair, instead of from material to cover the hair. It complements, elevates, and balances @amandlastenberg overall look, while reflecting the theme of the night," François said on his Instagram feed. "The tie at the back is transformed into a dramatic train. I love how Amandla takes full ownership of it. Working with @AmandlaStenberg is always exciting."

Lupita Nyong'o's Structural Hair

Nyong'o explained that the reference for her hairstyle was an actual artist — Brooklyn-based conceptual artist Lorna Simpson. She also explained that it was created by her longtime hairstylist Vernon François, who used hair pieces, lots of pins, and Redken's Triple Pure 23 Hairspray (Françcis is a spokesperson for the brand).

Look closely and you'll also notice her gorgeous blue eye makeup, which was the handiwork of makeup artist Nick Barose [11] and complemented her denim dress perfectly. "Double denim with a touch of #FemmeFatale from classic Hollywood Western Films," Barose said of his inspiration on Instagram.

Whitney Peak's Neon Dotted Liner

We're in awe of Peak's neon green winged liner, which instead of being a straight fluid line of pigment is actually a line of crystals and studs that makeup artist Tyron Macchausen carefully placed along her top lashes using a pair of tweezers. For the rest of her makeup, Macchausen used Chanel products, including the Rouge Coco Flash Lip Colour in Boy [12] (£33).

Gigi Hadid's '60s-Inspired Hair and Makeup

Hadid's newly red hair was styled by Esther Langham [13] in a voluminous ponytail adorned with a black Prada barrette, which matched her white corset dress and black elbow-length gloves, also by Prada. For her makeup, Hadid's longtime makeup artist Erin Parsons [14] creamed up a '60s-inspired look complete with blue eyeshadow and doubled winged liner.

Kristen Stewart's Pinup Bangs

Stewart's '50s-inspired style was the handiwork of hairstylist, Adir Abergel [15], who created a super high ponytail at the crown of her head and rolled the front section of her hair into what was called "bumper fringe" in the 1950s.

"I loved creating this moment for this year's Met Gala with the theme: "IN AMERICA: A LEXICON OF FASHION." Kristen in my muse forever!" Abergel wrote in a caption accompanying a photo of the vintage look. Stewart's new hair colour was also dreamed up by Abergel, who collaborated on the new blonde tone with LA-based colourist Daniel Moon for the actor's appearance at the Venice Film Festival two weeks ago.

Amanda Gorman's XL Braid and Laurel Hair Accessory

It's safe to say Amanda Gorman [16] and her team won the award for most crystal embellishments used on the red carpet. Over the top of a very subtle glittered base, makeup artist Joanna Simkin added dozens of tiny gems swooping from one side of Gorman's face to the other, punctuated by two larger gems placed on the inner corners of her eyes.

Emma Chamberlain's Flashes of Green Eyeliner

Chamberlain went monochromatic for her Met Gala in head-to-toe gold, from her bronde hair colour to her strappy stilettos. It's what made those tiny flashes of green along her top and inner corners of her eyes — applied by makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan Fisher [17] using Byredo products — standout in a really beautiful way.

Keke Palmer's 70s Glam

Palmer wanted to channel Diana Ross for the evening and she absolutely nailed it. To channel the iconic American songstress, Palmer wore her hair with lots of volume and a side part, and dramatic gold metallic smoky eyes — the perfect disco glam combination.

Maisie Williams's Matrix-Inspired Hair and Makeup

It was Maisie Williams' hair [18] that truly took our breath away, but the black rhinestones added as a final embellishment gave us major goth/Halloween [19]/villain vibes — and we absolutely here for it.

Storm Reid's Blonde Pixie Cut and Pearl Studded Eyes

For her ever first Met Gala, Storm Reid debuted a sophisticated new blonde pixie cut courtesy of hairstylist Greg Gilmore [20]. "Such a dope moment and beuatiful transformation into womenhood on my Boo Storm!" Gilmore gushed on his Instagram.

For her makeup, Paul Blanch [21] complemented the new 'do by creating the outline of a wing shape around her eyes using teeny pearl studs. He kept the rest of her makeup a pretty pink using all Maybelline products.

Alicia Keys' Studded Chignon and Red Lip

Hairstylist and curl expert Nai'vasha worked with Keys to create this beautiful Swarovski crystal-encrusted chignon. "A Royal ode to classic American glamour," Nai'vasha captioned her Instagram post. [22] Equally as regal was the red lip colour chosen by makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown, which was a combination of Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres in Brun Carmin [23] (£22) and
Chanel Rouge Allure Ink Fusion in True Red [24] (£33).

Rihanna's Smoky Plum Makeup

Rihanna [25]'s incredible smoky plum makeup look at the Met doubled as a Fenty Beauty launch. . . because of course it did. Fenty Beauty global makeup artist Hector Espinal [26] teased the new New Diamond Bomb Palette, which appears to feature some beautiful autumnal purple hues. To top off the look Espinal used Fenty Beauty Lip Paint in Underdawg [27] (£20), a deep burgundy shade.

Emily Blunt's Starry Hair Accessory

Blunt channeled the iconic American actress, Hedy Lamarr, who wore a similar headpiece in the 1940s (you may have seen the famous black-and-white photo on your Instagram feed at one point). To ensure Blunt's hair didn't distract from the Miu Miu crown, hairstylist Laini Reeves simply slicked it back into a ponytail, whilst makeup artist Jenn Streicher kept things understated, opting for gorgeous-yet-subtle metallic tones on the eyes using makeup from Chantecaille.

Yara Shahidi's Jazz Age Glam

For her look, Shahidi wanted to pay tribute to Josephine Baker, the American-born French dancer and singer popular in the 1920s and 30s. She did that with a custom-made beaded gown and headdress from Christian Dior.

Makeup artist Emily Cheng also turned to Dior for Shahidi's beauty look, explaining via press release that she wanted to do a "modern take on the 1920s, keeping shapes more subtle so it doesn't look costume-like". This involved keeping Shahidi's brows on the thinner side and applying shadow and blush in round shapes on the eyes and cheeks.

Gemma Chan's Green Shadow and Braided Hair Bow

With her Met Gala look, Chan wanted to pay tribute to Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American film star of Hollywood's golden era. Her black sequins mini dress featured a dragon design and a pale lime ruffled train, a colour that makeup artist Daniel Martin [28] picked up on and incorporated into Chan's makeup. The electric green eye shadow he applied all around her lids is mesmerising (completely with seriously feathery lashes), as is the intricate braided hair bow crafted by Owen Gould [29].

Diane Kruger's Neon Eye Makeup

Everything about Kruger's Met Gala look was electric, from her lime green gown by Prabal Gurung and fuchsia heels, to the flashes of hot pink eyeshadow and cobalt blue eyeliner applied on the inner and outer corners of her eyes by makeup artist Misha Shahzada [30].

Saweetie's Blonde Hair Flip

Saweetie's look featured rhinestones, rhinestones and a little more rhinestones, most notably in her hair. Her wet-look flipped-up blonde bob was encrusted with dozens of gems from root to tip and matched her custom Christian Cowan gown perfectly.

Megan Fox's Blunt Fringe

Fox also channelled a '50s pinup girl vibe with her blunt fringe (reminiscent of the most iconic American pinup star, Betty Page) and classic black liner and cherry-red lipstick — all punctuated by her incredible brows. (That lip by the way, is Buxom Powerline Plumpline Lip Liner in Real Red topped with Buxom Full Force Plumping Lipstick in Winner, by the way, applied expiertly by makeup artist Ash Holm.)

Teyana Taylor's Bedazzled Updo

Taylor incorporated elements of her barely-there Prabal Gurung gown into her voluminous updo, wrapping a silver chord around her hair that matched the straps. Look closely, and you'll also spot a few dainty crystals scattered throughout her baby hairs.

Nia Dennis's Braid Jewellery

First, gymnast Nia Dennis wowed us with a full on floor routine [31] in front of the museum steps. Then she wowed us again with her smouldering blue smoky eyes and high ponytail punctuated with small jewels.

Billie Eilish's Blonde Bob

Eilish also channelled Old Hollywood for the evening, with her shaggy blonde bob styled in Marilyn Monroe-esque waves and her makeup kept classic with her eyes rimmed in black liner and her lips painted a rosy nude (makeup artist Rob Rumsey used Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Runway Royalty over the brand's Lip Cheat in Iconic Nude).

Barbie Ferreira's Honey Hair Colour

Ferreira wanted "full opulence and and glamour" when it came to her Met Gala ensemble, and that directive also applied to her hair and makeup. The Euphoria [32] debuted a new "bronde" hair colour, courtesy of Malcolm Marquez [33], who styled Ferreira's hair in long curls with a middle part. To match her pearl-bedecked ensemble, Marquez placed pearl hair drops both along her part and all down the back of her hair.

Continuing with the vintage theme, makeup artist Kali Kennedy [34] bleached Ferreira's brows and then redrew them on in a '20s-inspired stick-thin shape. What we really can't get over, however, is the gorgeous purple shadow Kennedy blended all around her eyes.

Hailee Steinfield's Blond Bob Haircut

Steinfeld gets major points for this full-on hair transformation (brows included!). The natural brunette stepped out with an icy platinum blonde lob, which she complemented with equally as icy, cool-toned makeup colours on her eyes, lips, and cheeks.
