From Hair Flips to Curtain Bangs, This Spring's Biggest Hair Trends Are a Blast From the Past

11/03/2021 - 08:25 PM

You know what they say about history: it often tends to repeat itself, and in terms of some of this spring's biggest hairstyle trends [1], truer words have never been spoken. The last few months have been wildly nostalgic, as we've seen a handful of retro hairstyles [2] — from flipped ends [3] to curtain bangs [4] — popping up all over social media and virtual red carpets during awards season. A handful of this season's trends are once-divisive styles that have been given a bit of a modern upgrade — and there's more where that came from.

Ahead, we're taking you through a few pro-approved hairstyles [5] you can expect to see everywhere this spring.

Spring Hairstyle Trend: Bubble Ponytails

Bubble ponytails [6] are equal parts playful and fashionable, and they're such a cute way to add a little bit of fun to your look during the warmer months no matter where you're headed.

"I love this trend because like all trends, it starts with the kids and grows from there," celebrity hairstylist and Unite ambassador, Graham Nation [7], told POPSUGAR. "This is no different and honestly we can always learn from each other especially the youth and how to keep things fun and interesting."

The great thing about this style is that it's super easy to do by yourself at home; all you need are a few elastics and some holding spray.

"Fun tip: you can use different-colour elastics for a pop of colour in the ponytail or to match your outfit of the day or your face mask," hairstylist Mark Townsend [8] previously told POPSUGAR.

Spring Hairstyle Trend: Curtain Bangs

Bangs are one of the more divisive hair trends, but curtain bangs — which are '70s-inspired bangs that are split right down the middle and swept to each side — have made a huge comeback in the last year. Even Olivia Rodrigo recently got in on the trend [9] after speaking to her hairstylist about it for months.

"Curtain bangs are by far the most asked about style of the year and I'm absolutely here for it," Nation said. "They give so much change without totally overhauling your mane. They open up your face for the world to see and even air dried the curtain fringe looks so cool undone."

Spring Hairstyle Trend: Flipped Ends

The '70s isn't the only decade lending its inspiration to this year's hair trends. We've already seen tons of takes on the '60s-inspired hair flip this year, and even though it's been around for ages, it's set to make an even bigger comeback come springtime.

"Whether it's paired with a ponytail, half-up half-down, all down with a side or middle part, I think it's such a fun way to spice up a sleek straight look this spring," celebrity hairstylist and Unite ambassador, Hayley Heckmann [10], previously told POPSUGAR. "The style is super flattering on everyone and totally elevates a look."

Over the last year, we've seen this trend on celebs like Cardi B, Ariana Grande [11], and Millie Bobby Brown, though we're sure there'll be plenty more where that came from in the months to come.

Spring Hairstyle Trend: Side Parts

If you've checked your Twitter feed lately, you'd know that some Gen Zer somewhere recently decided that side parts are out [12] — but we'd beg to differ for a few reasons. Side parts are classic, and they're a go-to for people who aren't always comfortable with wearing middle parts. They were also all over the virtual red carpet at the Golden Globes [13] this year, with celebrities like Anya Taylor-Joy, Gal Gadot, and Lily Collins wearing them in side-swept, Old Hollywood-inspired styles. With that in mind, we think it's safe to say that the side part isn't going out of style just yet.
