  • "Buttery cup" is one of fall's biggest hair colour trends.
  • According to colourist Karissa Schaudt, the shade is a deep brown with subtle buttery highlights.
  • The colour is ideal for brunettes who want to spice up their colour without undergoing a total transformation to blond.

To most of us, fall is a season that symbolizes new beginnings, and there's no better way to give yourself a fresh start than spicing up your hair colour. While we're typically used to seeing darker colours take over when the weather cools, this year's fall hair-colour trends hit all sides of the spectrum, and shades like "buttery cup" will give you the best of both worlds.

Coined by Karissa Schaudt, colourist at Chicago's Maxine Salon, "buttery cup" can be characterized by hair that's mostly a deep brown colour with a minimal amount of highlights woven in to add dimension. The best thing about this shade — aside from how gorgeous it is — is that it's flattering on hair of all types and lengths, and it's an ideal option for brunettes who want to brighten up their hair without undergoing too dramatic a transformation.

"Brunettes can feel stuck in their dark shades and don't know how to change it up without becoming a blond," Schaudt told POPSUGAR. "This is minimal and natural, especially on virgin hair." To achieve the look, she suggests you ask your colourist to give you a "deep, warm shade and paint it from mids to ends, focusing the majority of the pieces around the face."
