17 Celebrities Who Have Got Real About Plastic Surgery

01/12/2021 - 05:10 PM

In 2021, especially compared to a decade ago, many more celebrities are willing to share their experiences with plastic surgery. Khloé Kardashian, for example, finally addressed rumours that she'd gotten plastic surgery [1] during the recent Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion special after years of speculation from fans. According to the reality star, she's only had one nose job, but she definitely wouldn't be the only celebrity to go under the knife and open up about it later.

Thankfully as the years have gone by, the public's perception of plastic surgery [2] has shifted. Since going under the knife [3] isn't solely looked at as an activity for the rich and vain anymore, and rather as a personal choice that anybody should be able to decide, celebrities have been a lot more forthcoming about the work they've had done, whether it's breast augmentations, nose jobs [4], or just a few injectables here and there.

Read ahead to see which celebrities have gotten real about plastic surgery.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra revealed in her memoir that she received a botched polypectomy early on in her career when her surgeon accidentally shaved the bridge of her nose while trying to remove the tissue.

"My original nose was gone. My face looked completely different. I wasn't me anymore," she wrote. Chopra has since had several more surgeries to restore her original nose, though she admitted that she's gotten "accustomed" to her face. "Now when I look in the mirror, I am no longer surprised," she wrote. "I've made peace with this slightly different me."

Kaley Cuoco

In a cover story for Women's Health [5] back in 2016, the Big Bang Theory alum admitted that she's had a nose job and her breasts done. "Years ago, I had my nose done and my boobs — best thing I ever did," she said. "As much as you want to love your inner self . . . I'm sorry, you also want to look good. I don't think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that's amazing."

Cardi B

Cardi B has never been afraid to open up about the changes she's made to her body before and after fame. In an interview with GQ in 2018, she admitted to getting illegal butt injections [6] when she was 21 after seeing that her colleagues with curvier figures were making more money stripping than she was. At the time, she paid $800 for the injections in a basement apartment in Queens, New York.

"They don't numb your ass with anything," she said. "It was the craziest pain ever. I felt like I was gonna pass out. I felt a little dizzy. And it leaks for, like, five days."

Later, after giving birth to her first child with husband Offset, she had liposuction and a breast augmentation [7] that she revealed after having to cancel a handful of shows to recover.

Kylie Jenner

After loads of speculation, Kylie Jenner admitted to getting lip fillers [8] when she was 15 on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, explaining that she had always felt insecure about having small lips.

Since then, she's maintained that the only thing she's tried are fillers, despite rumours that she's had more work done. "People think I fully went under the knife and completely reconstructed my face, which is completely false," she told Paper in 2019 [9]. "I'm terrified! I would never."

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen revealed to Byrdie back in 2017 that she's had work done on her entire face, except for her cheeks. "Everything about me is fake except my cheeks," she said. She also admitted in the same interview to having had liposuction under her arms.

Additionally, the model got breast implants earlier on in her career that she had removed back in June [10]. "They've been great to me for many years but I'm just over it," she wrote on Instagram [11]. "I'd like to be able to zip a dress in my size, lay on my belly with pure comfort! No biggie!"

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea has spoken publicly about having plastic surgery on more than one occasion. After having work done on her nose and breast in 2017, she thanked her plastic surgeon via Instagram [12]. The rapper later explained to Ellen DeGeneres [13] that she went under the knife simply because she wanted to [14].

"There was nothing wrong with me," she explained. "I think it's a personal choice and anybody, man or woman, they should be able to make an informed decision, and if you want to change something, then that's up to you."

Kourtney Kardashian

In 2010, Kourtney Kardashian told Nightline that she's had her breast done [15], but she wasn't ashamed about having the procedure done at all. "I have had breast implants, but it's so funny 'cause it's not a secret, I could care less," she said.

Jessica Simpson

In her memoir, Open Book, the singer admitted that she had two tummy tucks [16] against her doctor's orders after giving birth.

"The surgery wasn't for weight loss," she wrote. "I weighed 107 pounds when I planned the surgery. I wanted to get rid of the stretch marks and loose skin left sagging from my back-to-back pregnancies."

Simpson's doctor was concerned about the first surgery because of the toll that her alcohol and pill addiction had taken on her body. She ended up being fine, but she was still unhappy with the "loose skin that hung over my pants," so she scheduled a second tummy tuck after, but this time, she had a few complications.

"I got an infection — colitis — and was vomiting so much I thought I was going to bust my sutures," she said. The singer later admitted that she realised that plastic surgery wasn't a cure-all for what was happening with her mentally: "Really, it's about how you feel emotionally, and I was still just as hard on myself once those stitches were out."

Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland [17] once told Shape that she waited ten years [18] to get breast implants after consulting with her mother and Tina Knowles-Lawson. "I wanted to get breast implants when I was 18, but my mom and Beyoncé's mom told me to really think about it first," she said. Rowland took their advice and got the surgery at 28 years old.

Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter got a breast reduction in 2015. Her decision was the result of a combination of bullying from her peers and physical pain.

"Being a 5-foot tall girl and having extremely large breasts is really ostracising and excruciatingly painful," she told People. "But I didn't really express how I felt about that."

K Michelle

The R&B singer opened up in the past about getting black market butt injections with hopes that altering her figure would boost her career.

"He wasn't a doctor — it was black market, it was these 'hydrogel' injections — that's what they were being called," she told People [19]. "When I found out my favourite rapper did it, that's when I decided, 'I'm getting it done.'"

In 2017, she began to experience severe leg and back pain caused by the silicone from the injections spreading down her leg and damageing her tissue. Michelle ended up having four surgeries and two blood transfusions to remove the silicone from her body, and she used her story as a cautionary tale advising women against getting illegal plastic surgery.

"Now we know the outcome of these [injections]," she said. "Before it was up in the air, but now we know the outcome, that your body cannot handle foreign objects in it."

Kehlani

In a recent interview with Byrdie, Kehlani shared that they had recently removed their breast implants [20] after years of health complications. "I got breast implants about four years ago because I was very much struggling with what beauty meant to me," they told the publication. "I remember this video of me performing went viral. People were like 'she's horribly built.' So I went and got breast implants."

The decision to remove them stemmed from years of sickness like fatigue and joint pain, to name a few, which can sometimes happen to patients who have undergone breast augmentation surgery with silicone implants. Now that the implants are out, Kehlani said, "I actually feel way more beautiful than I ever felt because I feel healthy."

Clare Crawley

In a recent IGTV video, the former Bachelorette star opened up about her decision to have her breast implants removed [21] and the health implications that brought her to that choice. "The truth is, I've been going through things medically with my body that I have not had answers to for a couple of years," she said. After many trips to the doctor, "they found fluid sacs behind my implants. My white blood count for the last 5 years has been up and elevated this whole time and fighting something that we didn't know. And as much as I love my implants, my body is fighting them and recognised them as something foreign in my body. I know this is not everybody's case, this is my case and my body."

And with that, she made the decision to have her implants removed: "My health is the most important thing, so that's where I'm at right now — they're coming out."

Khloé Kardashian

After years of speculation and scrutiny from fans [22] about whether or not she'd gone under the knife in her career, Kardashian opened up about the plastic surgery she's had during the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion, which aired after the show's series finale. In part two of the reunion, host Andy Cohen decided to let Kardashian address the rumours while asking the siblings a series of different questions.

"Everyone says, 'Oh my gosh, she's had her third face transplant.' I've had one nose job," she said before explaining that, even after all the interviews she's done, Cohen was the first person to ask about it.

"Everyone gets so upset, like, why don't I talk about it?" she said. "No one's ever asked me. You're the first person that's ever asked me in an interview about my nose."

Victoria Beckham

In 2017, in a letter to her younger self published by Vogue UK, Victoria Beckham gave herself a few words of advice [23] — from "wear less makeup" to "don't let that make-up artist shave your eyebrows" — but she also described her feelings around getting breast implants. "And I should probably say, don't mess with your boobs. Just celebrate what you've got."

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton has always kept it real — and that extends to the cosmetic work she's had done in past [24], including breast implants, eyelid surgery, and a brow lift. "I wasn't naturally pretty, so I make the most of anything I've got," she said in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning. "I'm not a natural beauty, but I can enhance it. Whatever it takes, I do. I try to make the most of everything."

In 2011, Parton also joked in an interview with The Guardian that "if something is bagging, sagging, or dragging [25], I'll tuck it, suck it or pluck it."

Tyra Banks

In 2018, the supermodel opened up to People magazine about the plastic surgery she felt compelled to get [26] early on in her career. "I had bones in my nose that were growing and itching," Banks said. "I could breathe fine, but I added cosmetic surgery. I admit it! Fake hair, and I did my nose. I feel I have a responsibility to tell the truth."

She added: "Fix it or flaunt it — I think women should be able to do both. You want a hair weave? Fine. You want permanent eyebrows? Fine. We as women need to stop judging."
