Laura Whitmore's Hairstylist Shares the 9 Products That Her Celebrity Clients Love

23/06/2020 - 04:15 PM

Celebrity hairstylist Sophie Sugarman counts Laura Whitmore [1], Jessie Ware, and Delilah Belle Hamlin as clients. The Londoner started her hairdressing career at only 15 years old as an assistant at HOB Salons, before heading to New York City at 21 to sharpen her shears at Fashion Week. Since recently going freelance, Sophie launched a successful beauty blog — The Mane Style [2] — and took a moment to chat with POPSUGAR about her best tips for blondes, and the haircare products her clients love.

How to Keep Your Blonde Hair Bright, Not Brassy

Sophie told us that "Laura [Whitmore] always uses cruelty-free products". When maintaining the Love Island presenter's glossy bleached blonde hair, Sophie "always tries to use a purple shampoo [3]. Laura uses the Kérastase Blond shampoo, which is lovely. I definitely recommend for anyone who's struggling with taking out unwanted yellow tones from their hair to stick to a purple shampoo."

"Because I've got lighter ends, which tend to go a little bit brassier, I've been using the Soap & Glory N-ice and Bright toning shampoo. It restores the vibrancy and smells amazing," Sophhie said. "Also, IGK Hair do really cool toning drops that you can add into your styling products after washing your hair."

If you're trying to achieve a really blonde, vibrant look, then Sophie suggests that it's best to take your time, go to a professional, and never DIY at home [4]. "You're not going to achieve that in one go, especially if the colourist is taking care of your hair," she said.

How to Keep Your Hair Strong After Chemical and Heat Damage

"There are so many amazing masks that you can use," Sophie said. "I love a conditioning mask, something that's really hydrating and intense. I've been using the Wonder conditioner by Soap & Glory, which is beautiful. I also recommend pretreatments, which is a treatment that you put in your hair before you wash it. I've been using Olaplex No. 3 once a week. It's great. Also, Philip Kingsley does an amazing Elasticizer. It's especially great for curly hair, because it bounces the elasticity back into the hair."

When using one of Sophie's favourite treatments, she recommends applying it to damp hair before shampooing and putting a shower cap over it, or wrapping your hair in a warm towel, because the heat helps to lock in moisture in the hair.

How to Keep Your Hair Glossy and Frizz-Free, Especially in Humid Weather

A key takeaway from our chat with Sophie is that nowadays we have to treat the hair and scalp similar to how we approach the skin. Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp, which is why skincare and haircare should be seen through a similar lens. If you're heading outside on a hot day, consider hair products with UV protection, and gentle oils that will keep your hair moisturised and ward off humidity.

For frizz-prone hair, Sophie suggests "drying your hair in a cool place. That's going to stop the humidity from getting to the hair before you've even started styling. I always recommend oils on the hair to keep it moisturised and take any humidity away." Some of her favourite lightweight hair oils are "Split Happens, which is a conditioning styling oil by Soap & Glory. Also Ouai does an amazing Shine Mist, which is really lightweight for anyone with finer hair who doesn't want to start putting a lot of oil on their hair. Another product which I love, I mean, I'm obsessed with this product, is Good Behavior by IGK Hair. It's keratin in a can, and offers 24-hour frizz control."
