The smoky eye is a makeup staple, yes. For some, though, the whole dark eyeshadow thing can be a tad too intense for everyday wear. Here's the good news: Metallic copper is the new black when it comes to smoky eyes, according to makeup artist and global makeup director for L'Oréal Paris Val Garland. And TBQH, the bronzed-goddess vibe of it all is freakin' stunning — and perfect for daytime.

"This season, it's all about the eyes, but with a cool modern twist," said Garland, who partnered with L'Oréal Paris for Paris Fashion Week. "For me, the most exciting new trend is a monochromatic smoky eye that uses softer, lighter tones." While the look can be achieved using any colorway, the bronze shades are giving us major fall vibes. "A copper palette compliments every skin tone, is so easy to wear and is universally flattering."

To find out how to give the single-colour smoky eye the dimension it deserves, we asked Garland to share her tips on re-creating the gilded look.

Tip 1: Use Different Textures

Even though a monochromatic smoky eye stays in the same colour family, it's still possible to create depth. The golden rule, says Garland, is to layer different formulas and textures. To start, she recommends applying highlighting drops — we like the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops in Candlelight ($42) — on the lid to give a luminous base.

"Use a small amount from the pipette and using your ring finger, gently press onto the eyelid, going slightly above the crease." Then, build upon the base using cream, foiled or liquid eyeshadows.

Tip 2: Don’t Shy Away from Intense Pigment

"To get this unique, metal finish, I would use two to three different shades of copper so there's dimension," says Garland. "I love to use pigmented eyeshadows so you can blend out the colours without any fading."

For some copper and gold shades that are next-level gorgeous, try the Makeup By Mario Master Metals Eyeshadow Palette ($48). You can apply the shadows with your finger or use a mixing medium to create a liquid foil finish.

Tip 3: Keep the Base Simple

For your complexion, simplicity is key; your eyes should remain the focal point. "I would use a medium coverage foundation that gives a glowy fresh face finish," says Garland. She recommends the L'Oréal Infallible Fresh Wear 24 Hr Foundation ($15), which is a great drugstore buy. "The final step to complete the base is to lightly powder the T-zone to mattify the area and leave the rest of the skin fresh and dewy."
