Your Favourite $7 Drugstore Mascara Now Comes in a Clean, Vegan Formula

Out of any category of makeup products, I've probably tested the most mascaras in my years as a beauty editor. I'm always looking to try new launches, old cult favourites [1], high-end options, affordable choices, you name it — but there will always be a special place in my heart for drugstore mascaras. Growing up, I only used drugstore products [2] and found so many formulas that I loved and still use today, but it's not lost on me that there's a lot of room for improvement in the variety of clean options available. That's why when I learned that CoverGirl was launching a clean version of its bestselling Lash Blast Volume Mascara, I knew it was going to be major.

I can't remember exactly when it was that I got my first orange tube of CoverGirl mascara, but it was probably around the time I was wearing too much eyeliner in my waterline and my wardrobe consisted of only UGG boots, skinny jeans, and zip-up hoodies with brand names printed across the front of them (aka the 2000s). Clearly, we've come a long way since then, but I've carried this mascara with me as a tried-and-true favourite ever since. Now that it comes in a clean and vegan formula, I feel like the mascara has had its own glow-up.

At face value, the pastel-green tube is the only noticeable difference in the CoverGirl Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara — it is still the same shape and has the same thick brush as the old one. It also promises to offer the same high-impact, volumized look, but without any parabens, sulphates, talc, or mineral oil. The other major change comes from the materials that the mascara is made from. This new pack is FCS (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and made with 80 percent recycled paper.

I expected the new formula to be pretty similar to the original (meaning, would be volumizing and lengthening without clumping), but I was still surprised just by how much after applying it for the first time. Having now tried them both, I honestly can't tell the difference between them when it comes to how my lashes look, which is a win — for the brand and for me, seeing as I prefer to use clean cosmetics whenever possible.

My Lashes With the CoverGirl Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara

The CoverGirl Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara comes in four shades — Black Brown, Black, Very Black, and Pitch Black (I used Very Black) — and will be at Target [3] this November and at other major retailers where the brand is carried in January 2021.

If, like me, you've been waiting and hoping for this classic to come out in a clean version, consider your wish granted.
