Crystal Eye Makeup Will Continue to Dominate in 2022

24/01/2022 - 10:30 AM

Minimalism has had its time in the spotlight, and it seems like maximalists are ready to shine. As a result, the streets are dripping with main character energy. Gone are the baggy sweat suits and stretched-out wash days [1], people are making it a point to show up and show out to reclaim the years we spent having to remain inside our homes. The biggest trend in beauty, according to Pinterest Predicts' 2022 report [2]? Crystal eye makeup [3].

Glitter, gemstones, sparkle, and full-on crystals are expected to dominate the makeup world next year with searches for the trend already up 110 percent on Pinterest. Elevated eye makeup has already begun to make its return with everything from the inner corner pop [4] to the four dot eye trend dominating social media over the last few months. The Met Gala alone was proof enough that crystal-embellished was the theme of the year.

However, crystal eye makeup or bejewelled eyes are where people take gems (or Swarovski crystals if we're feeling fancy) and use them to accentuate their eyes. One of the most recent iterations of this trend we've seen is by makeup artist Nikki Wolff [5], who completely decked out Addison Rae's eye makeup with the trend for the British Fashion Awards [6] recently and it was so. damn. mesmerising.

Join us in also spending a (potentially inordinate) amount of time staring at sparkly eye makeup. Ahead we've rounded up our favourite crystal eye makeup looks to serve as ultimate inspiration.

Griff's Face Crystals

Griff knows how to take a trend and make it truly her own, including crystals. For the The Fashion Awards 2021 at the Royal Albert Hall, she wore teeny gems across one side of her forehead reminding us of a pretty constellation. We love how she paired these embellishments with a thick metallic graphic liner look.

Amanda Gorman's Crystal Eye Makeup

Gorman's sweeping crystal eye makeup at the 2021 Meta Gala looked to be galaxy inspired and matched her crystal headpiece perfectly.

Dua Lipa's Crystal Cat Eye at the iHeartRadio Festival

Dua Lipa is proof that a cat eye can instantly be jazzed up with the addition of crystals. Makeup artist Samantha Lau [7] painstakingly applied the gems to the upper and lower lash line to create a maximalist finish.

Acacia C. McBride's Crystal Eye Accents

Makeup artist Nikki Wolff strikes again for this sparkly crystal accented eye on model Acacia C. McBride.

Loni Baur's Heavy Undereye Crystals

Makeup Artist Loni Baur adds fluttery accents to a model's monotoned crystal eye look.

Julia Garner's Crystal Eye Makeup

Why do a black winged liner when you can do a silver gem-encrusted winged liner instead? It seems that Julia Garner and makeup artist Pat McGrath [8] thought just that. At the 2021 Met Gala, Garner wore five tiny individual gems placed from the outer corners of her eyes extending up towards her temples and three smaller gems on the inner corners of her eyes.

Storm Reid's Pearl-Studded Eye Makeup

For her ever first Met Gala, Storm Reid went full-on pearl-themed with this beautiful statement eye look. Makeup artist Paul Blanch [9] created a swooping shape with teeny pearl studs around Reid's eyes and kept the rest of her makeup a pretty pink using all Maybelline products.

A Full Crystal Winged Liner

Makeup Artist Jessica Silicz created a crystal winged liner that made an otherwise nude eye look sparkle and shine like the most intricate piece of art.

The Crystal Inspired Remix of the Four Dot Eye Makeup Trend

Tik Toker @glamwithsuzan remixed the viral four dot eye makeup trend using crystals instead of white eyeliner and the minimal design gave maximum sparkle factor.

A Colourful Cut-Crease Accented By Crystals

This look gives a colourful twist to the crystal eye makeup trend.

Grimes's Pearl Eye Makeup at the Met Gala 2021

Trust Grimes to take any theme and fully run with it. The 2021 Met Gala was no different, but this year, her makeup was something you might actually be able to re-create at home. To show off that epic mirrored face mask, bold black winged liner was the focal point of her makeup. To soften the whole look up and add some extra detailing, pearl gems were added along the top of her eyebrows, as well as underneath her lower lash line.
