What Does Demi Lovato's Butterfly Neck Tattoo Mean?

Is Demi Lovato's New Butterfly Neck Tattoo in Honour of a New Song?

Demi Lovato has added a handful of tattoos to her collection that honour her journey to recovery. After getting the word "survivor" tattooed on her neck back in December, the "Tell Me You Love Me" singer debuted another neck tattoo via social media this week.

In a selfie shared to Instagram on Sept. 3, Lovato showed off a new tattoo of a butterfly just under her ear. While she didn't specify the meaning behind her new ink, butterfly tattoos are known to represent transformation and freedom, so it's very possible the singer got it as another way to symbolize how far she's come after opening up about her struggles with sobriety in the past.

Fans are also speculating that Lovato may have gotten the tattoo in honour of a song she's releasing soon called "Butterfly" and that the photo's caption — which reads, "Dear little me, I'm sorry that it took so long but baby your [sic] free" — may actually just be lyrics from said song, which she revealed she was writing via an Instagram Story shared last month.
