I Tried Shaving My Face With the Dermaflash Mini Device, and I Can't Recommend It Enough

About once a month, I break out my mini razors and dermaplane my face. For the uninitiated, dermaplaning isthe process of running a small blade across your face to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz from the surface — kind of like dry shaving your face. A more aggressive version of the treatment is frequently done professionally by aestheticians, but plenty of gentler at-home tools exist to allow you to get the task done from the comfort of your bathroom.
So, why would I want to shave my face, you ask? Let me count the reasons. Dermaplaning helps get rid of uneven texture on the surface of your skin, physically exfoliates to remove dead skin cells, and banishes peach fuzz, all of which help make your skin appear brighter and feel smoother. Because the process leaves your face baby-soft, it also helps with better makeup application. Not to mention, visibly sloughing away peach fuzz from your cheeks and forehead is so satisfying.
There are a few at-home tools available to help you do the treatment at home, such as the editor-loved Dermaflash Luxe, but the device is a bit cumbersome to travel with. That's why the brand released the Dermaflash Mini Precision Peach Fuzz Removal Device ($69), which fits in the palm of your hand. How cute is that?
Like its big sister, the Dermaflash Mini features removable blades and a one-and-done on-off button, making it super easy to use. The biggest difference between the mini and the full-size device (aside from the actual size) is the power source — the mini is battery-operated, making it great for travel. Because of its tiny size, the Dermaflash Mini is designed for precision dermaplaning, like between your eyebrows, on your upper lip, and around your hairline. As a bonus, the mini also features a steel roller ball on the end to help de-puff your undereye area.
When I first took the Dermaflash Mini out of the box, I think I let out an audible "aww!" — something about the tiny size makes it adorable. However, despite its small size, the device does not mess around. After popping off the end cap, inserting the battery, and pressing the on-button, the device instantly powered on with a faint buzzing noise. I began dermaplaning my face the way I always do — starting on my cheeks and working in short downward strokes. Then, I moved to my forehead. (Typically, you want to use your free hand to hold your skin taught, but I couldn't in the video because I was holding my phone.)
It doesn't take much for the peach fuzz to pile up and fall to the sink, which is the most satisfying part. Immediately after you finish an area, you can feel the difference in your skin's texture. Because the Dermaflash Mini is so tiny, it made getting to those hard-to-reach places (like between my eyebrows and around my hairline at my temple) way easier; I didn't feel like I would slip and risk shaving off the entire tail of my brow. And the device is gentle enough that it didn't leave me with any redness in my skin, which is a major plus.
Although the skin-care benefits of the Dermaflash Mini are practically identical to the original device, there's no denying that the mini version is far more portable and great for travelling. Whether you're going to a wedding or on holiday, you can just slip it into your handbag or carry-on and go, which is exactly what I plan on doing with it.
