Curly haircare brand DevaCurl [1] is currently under investigation [2] following allegations from customers and influencers claiming that its products have caused hair loss and damage.

Users on social media began voicing concerns over the safety of the brand's products — which range from its popular No-Poo Original Shampoo to its Leave-In Decadence Leave-In Conditioner — after a beauty influencer named Ayesha Malik posted a video to her YouTube channel titled "Why I Stopped Using DevaCurl." [3] (Malik is a former DevaCurl ambassador with over 200,000 subscribers.) In the 16-minute video, which has raked in over a million views since being posted on Jan. 31, Malik claimed that DevaCurl's products have damaged her hair and led to hair loss and scalp problems. "For the first time in my life, I experienced dandruff," she said. "I was itching like crazy, my scalp was on fire on some days."

Up until eight months ago, the bulk of Malik's haircare routine for the last six years consisted of DevaCurl products, and she's since removed all videos of her promoting or using them from her channel. Meanwhile, the conversation has also carried over to Twitter [4], with hundreds of users also coming out to denounce the brand with claims that they've experienced side effects similar to those mentioned by Malik. "Been trynna figure out why my hair is thinning for a year and a half. I never imagined DevaCurl, being the brand that it is, was the culprit. Smh," wrote one user [5].

In response to the backlash, DevaCurl has released a statement [6] on its website claiming to have conducted additional testing on all of its products at the manufacturer and warehouse level. According to the brand, no safety issues have been found with the products.

"We don't speculate on why some people are attributing the challenges with their curls to our products," the statement reads. "As part of our ongoing commitment to product safety and the satisfaction of our Deva Community, we are conducting additional testing with an independent party."
