Drew Barrymore on Her Favourite Roles: "Whenever I Think of a Character, I Go Hair First"

Actress, producer, author, director, talk show host, entrepreneur — Drew Barrymore has done it all. The same can be said about beauty trends and styles — she's tried them all, even if it was only once. When your career spans four decades and includes major titles like Charlie's Angels, Never Been Kissed, He's Just Not That Into You, and a whole lot more, it brings many opportunities to experiment with different looks — and Barrymore most definitely did.
The reason is pretty simple: more than any other category of beauty, she just loves hair. "Whenever I think of a character, I go hair first," Barrymore told POPSUGAR. "Hair is so defining — I am hair-obsessed."
That said, it only makes sense that she's launching a collection of hair tools at Walmart as an extension of her cosmetics brand, Flower Beauty. As someone who's always enjoyed experimenting and playing with hair, whether for a movie role or just for fun, she wanted to bring that opportunity to other people at an affordable price.

The Character's Beauty Style She Identifies With the Most
Barrymore has worn a lot of hats — or, rather hairstyles — in her roles. For Fever Pitch she cut bangs; for Scream she pulled inspiration from Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface with her blunt, blown-in bob. As for the character's beauty style that most closely matches her own, she said Sheila from Santa Clarita Diet isn't that far of a stretch, but her favourite role to date was far more high-maintenance.
"I love Lucy from 50 First Dates with her big blond, mermaid hair, but that was a hard look for me to achieve — that was a lot of hair," said Barrymore, adding that a lot of prep work and hair extensions went into creating the look.
The 90's Character and Hairstyle She's Still Obsessed With
For Barrymore, changing her hair is one of her favourite ways to connect with a character. When she says she goes all out, she means it. "I tried tight, curly, orange-red hair in a movie called Home Fries and you would think it's a wig, but I totally damaged my real hair making it [look like that]," she said. "It was the most high- maintenance hair look ever and I loved it so much."
Clearly, she's pretty daring when it comes to her look, but there's one hairstyle that she said she'd never try again: a pixie cut. "I used to love tiny, tiny, short hair, but that is not at all what I want to do today."
The Hair Hacks She Swears By
Having worked with some of the most amazing hairstylists in the business, you could say that Barrymore has learned a thing or two about keeping her hair in tip-top shape. (This is also out of necessity seeing as she likes styling her hair so much.) There are two hair hacks that she's picked up over the years that she swears by.
First: "Dust your ends if your hair is in dire shape — it will really help it and transform it," said Barrymore. (For anyone who isn't familiar, dusting is a cutting technique where you trim off dead ends without removing length from your hair.)
She also loves Malibu C hair treatments, like the Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Hair Remedy ($18). "When you do it, you can wear it as a mask or there's a five-minute treatment and your hair looks mouthwash — it comes out like green, and it just gets all the sediment, and water, and chlorine, and everything that's in our hair out," she said.
The Products In Her Everyday Hair-Care Routine
As someone who's hair-obsessed — and who has their own line of heat styling tools at Walmart — Barrymore has her everyday hair-care routine down pat. Out of the entire Flower Beauty hair tools collection, the Flower Ionic Pro Hair Dryer ($80) is her favourite. "I love my hairdryer because it's what I use every day," said Barrymore. In an effort to make her styling tools different from the vast amount of options already on the market — because she admits there are a lot — she focussed on both the functionality and design. That's clear in the bright and colourful cords (she's very against black cords living on her bathroom counter) and other small details, like the roller on the hairdryer to adjust the temperature as opposed to buttons for high and low. "I have to style my hair all the time, so it's important that it just leaves your hair in a nice state."
At the very top of her list of must-haves when designing her hair tools collection: affordability. "I don't like spending a lot of money on things," said Barrymore. "It doesn't make you feel good. High costs are hard. You know?"
Drew's Beauty Advice to Her 20-Something Self
By the time she was 20 years old, Barrymore had already appeared in over 25 TV shows or movies. But aside from amassing a resume that rivaled people three times her age, she was just a normal 20-something-year old and was exploring the vast world of beauty as such. When asked if she would give her old self any advice, she quickly declined. "I wouldn't have told myself anything," said Barrymore. "I was always into playing — putting eyeshadow to my temples." She prides herself on the fact that she always allowed herself to be expressive and go for it — in the beauty category and just life.
But then the idea of sunscreen hit her, as it does most of us who neglected to abide by the very basic beauty rule at a young age. "I never took sunscreen seriously and did not wear it at all — it always made me break out. So, I was like, do I want to have sun damage or zits all the time? And I picked the sun damage because I thought, I'm going to pay for that later," said Barrymore. "So yeah, [wear] sunscreen."
